Hate to say it but there is probably an anti-competitive reason for Churchill Downs buying all these big race tracks and eventually shutting them down.

What a surprise! Imagine Churchill wanting to protect Rivers! I still do not rest my case. If they need more cash, they can always raise the prices for Derby seats.

The Illinois horsemen are getting a large slice of humble pie for years of battling Arlington and working in lockstep with Hawthorne. Where are they going to run next summer? Canterbury, Indiana, and Fairmount? lol

Hawthorne is going to wind up with a monopoly on Chicago thoroughbred and harness racing out of this, the same Hawthorne that hasn’t lifted a finger in months on building the casino and sportsbook that it has a license to build

You are correct! But the tracks you mention will have purses equal to or greater than AP or HAW except for Fanduel. Don't forget Prairie Meadows. HAW is and will always be a dive. Racing in Illinois is a disgrace! So much for Illinois breds.

Sure they’ll run for bigger purses at CBY or IND, but the horsemen won’t get the same day rate when they’re stabled there as they would when they would spend the summer shipping out of AP, not to mention that owners still won’t be turning a profit at either track. It’s a losing scenario for all illinois horsemen

But like I said earlier in the thread, every party shares in the blame

No disagreement on what you say. How many horsemen are left here? Rivelli is the only big one. I wouldn't worry about him. The others are already gone. Brown will not ship to win purses at HAW.

I went to buy tickets for this weekend and had a good laugh at CDI wanting $40/ticket for a box and that you have to buy every seat in the box (so the box would be $240)

That same box 6 years ago was $670 for the entire season when I had it, all seats included. CDI and AP can go pound sand

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hawthorne and Fairmount/Fanduel came up with a circuit after Arlington closes.

Would not surprise me one bit. Fairmount could take the fall and cold weather dates (average in the 40's Dec-Feb), allowing Hawthorne to run harness races from October through April. Maybe Hawthorne will re-establish the infield paddock, liked that when they did it in the late 80's.

I had a couple of quibbles too- Harry Henson, who was the Arlington announcer before Phil Georgeff and equally as famous, should have gotten a mention, for instance.

But they were just quibbles. The article was really good.

I'm putting aside all of the current news, and I'm going to Arlington tomorrow for closing day. Going with a longtime handicapping friend of mine. Forget about the current problems, etc for a day, and reflect back on the great times I had there. It was the first race track I went to when I was about 9 years old with my dad and uncle. So many great horses, jockeys, and memories. I haven't been there this meet, and two weeks ago I said I wasn't going back before closing day. Maybe I'm selfish or dishonest with myself, but I thought I owed it to myself to go one last time. Just to be there again, a final time. -- Jim.
