I believe cheek pieces are like shadow rolls, but on the side of the bridle (instead of the nose band). They act to restrict the horse's vision (like a shadow roll/blinker combo).

I think it is a piece in the mouth to keep the bit from hurting the mouth of a horse if he has a tender spot. But I'm only guessing.

Typcially, the cheek piece is what holds the nose band.

This is what I know as a cheek piece. You see them (or at least I have) more commonly in Euro racing:

So I guess that's understood to mean the same thing as a shadow roll but on the cheek piece.
