Even if they get crushed, you would at least know. And Trump isn't a con; rather he's a blowhard billionaire opportunist, who thinks only about the benefits to himself.

You think you know Donald but you don't, he is in your head constantly but you are not in his head. You think too small to understand him, I will give you credit for trying thou.

Nothing about his trade policy would lead one to believe that. Absolutely NOTHING. I'm sorry but Trump is not pro-market.

My thoughts on Ted, the only smart thing he ever did was leave Canada!

I don't understand why so few people get this. Trump is a statist, an advocate of big government. He wants more government control, as long as he is running the government. He wants to control trade, health care, and immigration, not leave it to Congress or the states or the free market.
He thinks that he can make "deals" with China and Mexico that will result in more benefit to the US than free trade will. He can't, because he doesn't understand trade and he doesn't understand manufacturing. He apparently understands real estate. He didn't do too well when he got outside his area of expertise (casinos, airlines, mortgages, branded consumer goods, "education", etc.). There is no reason to believe that he will do any better in government. The few policy details he has released indicate otherwise.
I saw a study recently that said about 20% of job loss in manufacturing over the last 20 or so years is due to foreign competition. The rest is due to productivity gains here. Trump can't change that with tariffs. Free trade means cheaper consumer goods for Americans. Tariffs on Chinese imports won't bring those jobs back. They will increase prices or move those Chinese operations someplace else, like Vietnam.

Exactly... Best way to describe Trump's views on trade to the average American consumer is "Your iPhone is $150 more expensive now and is made in India as opposed to China..."

Trump doesn't understand manufacturing in the modern world. Very little of the value added in the price of an iPhone comes from a Chinese factory. Parts come from many different countries and are assembled in China. And all of that is minor compared to the value added in America by designers, software, sales and marketing, etc.

You are correct Don, I didn't listen to Corolla... I just do not take radio talking heads, standup comics, pundents, and the like serious.
The only one I ever took 'seriously' was Mort Sahl, and I'll leave it at that as I am now dating myself to the point of embarrassment.

Horseshit, manufacturing in the modern world will mean made in America again. Our economy is not dependent on propping other economy's up, it is dependent on Americans being in a good position to pump our own energy into the economy. The rest of the world has shit its pants going down the socialist path instead of innovation and prosperity, there is no need to feel the burn or smell the stink.

Ah, just the thought of it makes me nostalgic for some old Detroit iron, with a big V8, tail fins, and rusted out rocker panels.

By having us pay more for domestically produced widgets while the rest of the free world enjoys the same widget produced abroad for a significantly lower price.
But... at least he's a capitalist...
