Father died at 12 and this hastened leaving home @ 17.

Ergo, doing it ALL my way and learning many of life's lessons on the way !!

When I was 19 I got physically humiliated. Led me to martial arts, jumping out of airplanes and climbing mountains.

No doubt. When I met my wife.

Before that I was just goin' to the track, playin' ball, gettin' high....

God I miss those days.

Mystery man

I was at a restaurant inside the racecourse. There was this guy (never seen him earlier) sitting at the next table, very slowly sipping his beer, with a small leather bag lying on the table.

Apparently, he was not betting, did not even have the book (form) in his hand. Sat like that for the first 6 races on the card.

Immediately after the 6th got over, he called the waiter, paid, and got up.

Curious, I along with my friend, followed him. He went straight to bookmakers' ring, removed a wad of currency from the leather bag, and bet 50k (a fortune in the early 1980's) on a horse named Tulipa at 7-1. Even more strange, he did not even go out into the stands to watch the race, nor did he move closer to the nearest TV.... it was as if the guy was just not interested in the actual running of the race!

Tulipa won, it took about five minutes for the result to become official, and this mystery guy, who hadn't moved far from the bookmaker's stall during all this, collected a cool 400k in cold cash! Did not even bother to count, just stuffed the bundles in his bag, and walked out of the gates.

Never saw him again, but his self-control, patience and business-like attitude left a deep impression on me. It took me another 20+ years to be "somewhat" like him.

I think it's easier to be responsible when you are responsible for someone else.
We rarely (never) agree in our discussions, but I sense a good man. Your granddaughter is very fortunate.

Good News!! Since you are never right in our discussions, the law of averages indicates strongly that you will be right in your decisions regarding your granddaughter.
