Meadowlands: Friday, January 15

Race One:

9 AVAYA HANOVER is my long-shot try in this evening’s “Big M” opener. In last Friday evening’s lid-lifter, this 4 YO campaigned against better. Last week, this mare set off for the lead from her same outside post. This Western Ideal-bred mare found a mid-field tuck. As the field reached the half, this mare took to the outside; she immediately found herself behind a tiring horse who was “going retro.” G. Nap. (He had to “tap on the brakes”) took this Allamerican Native-bred three-wide as the field pushed into the far turn. This A and G’s Delight-bred held well, but was no match for the front-runners. She finished 7th but she was less than four lengths off the winner. Monsieur Quebecois, Simon Allard, is this mare’s chauffeur. Mark Kesmodel trains.

7 FRANSCHOEK
1 MANHATTAN PLAY
4 PRETTY MAGIC

Race Two:

5 DA BOOGIE MAN, a medium M/L long-shot is heading in the “right direction” (This Kadabra-bred is my alternative to the anticipated prohibitive “chalk” listed just below). This is this 4 YO’s third start off a layoff (if you include the qualifier). I like that angle. In his last, this gelding (he went off at 22-1) reached “the point” from his outside post. This RC Royalty-bred would give up the lead going down the backstretch. This Hurrikane Janie-bred finished in a dead heat for 3rd. He now draws mid-pack. That should enhance his chances. A. Mac is in the bike for trainer Tony Ciuffetelli

2 R HERBIE BLUECHIP
7 STONEBRIDGE SYDNEY
6 MANHATTANUP NO ICE

Race Three:

3 SO SO DE VIE is my selection in this GSY amateur-drivers pace. This American Ideal-bred led the field to the top of the stretch in his last only to fade to 7th in the closing race-stages. This Cambest-bred may have needed that last race as “a tightner.” Tony Beltrami is in the sulky for trainers Williams Hernandez.

7 SCIROCCO MISTYSAID
6 IMAGEOFAROCKER
2 WHATSTROUBLNUROCKY

Race Four:

6 BEYOND ORDINARY is my choice. This Kadabra-bred has been “camera-shy” in his most recent tries. Oh, he’s been, as Martin Brando said in On The Waterfront, a “contendah,” but he has yet to grace, at least recently, “The Big M’s” winner’s circle. Tonight might just be “the night.” “DD,” Dexter Dunn, is the reinsman for trainer Jenny Melander.

3 LOOK IN MY EYES
1 SCIROCCO PATRICK
9 LIGHT BLUE MOVERS

Race Five:
7 KRISPY GINGER is an up-and-coming 3 YO filly. She finished a closing 3rd in this company last week. Any slight improvement… Dexter Dunn, the 10-times New Zealand driving champ, is in the sulky for trainer Per Engblom.
