Suburban Handicap

Is the older handicap division pathetic or what?
The two favorites looked like they were looking for a place to lie down.
Neither one did much of anything to warrant being so bad in the stretch.
The biggest move It's a Bird made was his retreat from the rail.
Good top to a rather bad Belmont holiday card.

The Dwyer was interesting, the rest took a back seat to the Food Network.

That was a horror show. None of them wanted to win.

I thought it was odd that Leparoux would give up the mount on the 2-1 morning line favorite Its a Bird in the $400,000 Suburban to ride Informed Decision in the $150,000 Chicago Breeders Cup. Granted, Informed Decision was as close to a lock as one will see, but the fact JL went to Chicago instead of New York was a clear red flag for Its a Bird, who was dead on the board thru out the betting and ran like it.

Oh for the days gone by, when the Suburban was something to look foward to, when really, really good horses ran in it.

Remember the old Handicap Triple - with REAL stakes horses in it? How far this game has fallen since the drugs took over - legal and otherwise.
Trainer in a Bottle.

The race came back below par [Beyer gave a race a 105], but the field was not all bad. At least it was playable.

Those were the days...if we think the Triple Crown was (is) hard to win...the old Handicap Triple Crown was nearly impossible...only 4 took it...Whisk Broom, Tom Fool, Fit to Fight and Kelso...amazing isn't it

The best Surburban ever: (IMHO)

Great race - I remember it well.
Looks like 4 horse stakes fields at Belmont is a tradition!

They must have heard me......Fabulous Strike is out - another 4 horse stake!

Were you there, Tom...maybe you were right next to me
oh, we didn't have small fields like that one too much back then...but when you have Forego and Foolish Pleasure...well, not too many wanted to try beating either of them, I guess...I think that 4th horse was tossed in as a 'sacrificial lamb' ...and everyone figured Forego to be a 'lock'...if another horse looked Foolish in the eye...he'd lay down his life to win

Good memories, eh!!

Nah, watched it on TV at OTB. Or, heard it rather - no TV back then.
Just Russ DiBella, the voice of OTB.

Like I said...weird, huh... although, I would rather be at the Big A in July than in any winter month...I hated vanning over there with a horse when it was cold...waiting around in the d barn for race time I always froze my butt off in those cinder block barns...thank goodness we had Hialeah to get away to)

I was gonna type some about it...but instead, found this Wikipedia history of the Suburban (for your enjoyment, Tom )...

"The Suburban Handicap is an American Grade II Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Open to horses age three and older, it is run at the classic one-and-one-quarter mile distance on dirt for a $400,000 purse.

In 2009, this race will be downgraded from a Grade I to a Grade II event.[1].

The Suburban Handicap was contested at a distance of one and one half miles in 1975 and at a mile and three-sixteenths in 1976. Beginning in 1978, the race was started on Belmont Park's clubhouse turn and set at a mile and a quarter.

Named after the City and Suburban Handicap in England, the Suburban will have had its 120th running in 2006. First held at Leonard Jerome's Sheepshead Bay Race Track in 1884, it stayed at that location until 1913. For 1915 alone, the Suburban was held at Empire City Race Track; afterward, it was moved to Belmont Park and there it has remained except for the races of 1961 to 1974 and 1976. During that time, the Suburban was hosted at Aqueduct Racetrack. The race was not run for three years: 1911, 1912, and 1914.

The Suburban is the final of the three races that compose the New York Handicap Triple series of races, as it follows the Metropolitan Handicap and the Brooklyn Handicap. It is currently sponsored by Shadwell Farm. Four horse have won the Handicap Triple:
