Texas Sheriff takes my advice
I’ve been calling for the Sheriff to deputize citizens for months. I even sent a message to the Governor suggesting this.

How will that work practically? Will the local citizens get some LE training? Carry guns? Authorized to make arrests, I assume?

No. They will do a couple things only.
Allow Deputized citizen to stop and detain.
Allow citizen to only use force under special circumstances.
It will never go far enough. But it will add a layer to the enforcement.
You can be certain there will be fewer illegals traveling through that county
