RIP Sam 'Bam Cunningham

A fantastic and gritty running back that I used to watch play at USC in the 70's.

RIP

Great back. Played up here for the Patriots. Part of the best draft class in Patriots history. Also part of a Pats team that held the NFL yards rushing record until broken in 2019 by the Ravens

Rest in Peace. Watched many of his college and pro highlight films when I was in High School. That was a pre game tradition to get us fired up for home games watching films of college and pro players known for punishing opponents.

Wait…he was like 70. I remember him from college. Too young to be dead.

What hasn't been mentioned is that Sam Cunningham may have individually changed the course of college football history in the South.

Cunningham and his integrated Southern Cal team mates went into the deep South in 1970 and beat up an all-white Alabama team 42-21 in Birmingham.

Cunningham would finish the game with 135 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries en route to a great nickname and a place in history.

RIP Sam (Bam) Cunningham.

Wasn't he one of the first guys to jump and dive over the pile at the goal line? Made more famous by fellow alum(?) Marcus Allen?
