Re: Dialed IN/Florida work
Dialed In only had 1 published 4 furlong work before the Florida Derby and did ok there. What's Zito doing with the horse on the other mornings at Palm Meadows [with few eyes on him]?,he's not just standing around in the barn.

Is that what Zito meant by, "he likes the track"? Very good work, it preceded his first start at KEE
|
His first start was at Churchill, a win. Maybe that is what Zito meant.

Had Kee on my mind, thanks. KD contenders who have won at CD:
Astrology - probably not running
Anthony's Cross - ditto
Dialed In
Santiva - not likely
Shackelford - on the bubble
Uncle Mo - BC Juvenile win
Archarcharch ran 2nd at CD

Shackelford is in and he is going, and according to trainer Dale Romans has a legitimate chance to win.

I remember in the Preakness pre-race interview last year when asked about First Dude, Romans replied, "Don't be surprised if he runs big." He ran big alright (2nd) at 24-1.

Is it really that time of year again where everyone is going to analyze workouts like they are really important?

Works are just a small part of building stamina. Two minute licks and long gallops build stamina. Works are good to relax a horse so they don't get to high. How many long gallops and two minute licks did Dialed In have? Probably alot. In my mind a race is worth 3 works but three works does equal a race. What did you guys want a mile in 1:36? And if the horse is happy that is like money in your pocket is what I was told.

Zito has had him galloping 2 1/2 miles everyday...IMO, not to worry about Dialed In's stamina.

Larry Jones did not train Afleet Alex, it was Tim Ritchey.

That's right isn't it. Larry must have trained another one I liked around that time.

Yep, and even Ritchey was quick to point Afleet Alex was the exception, not the rule, when it came to his training regiment.

yea. in all seriousness we are talking about this group's dominant racehorse. He runs his race every time. Lapenta finally hit the derby jackpot. DI is Zitos best gig in years. Horsepeople can SEE his quality by looking at him walk, look at his face, his pedigree is strong, he won against the grain vs some of these pretenders in the FD. Sure if the race greatly favors speed, or if he is subject to a terrible and/or wide trip and has to beat a suckup dreamtrip horse in the stretch there are some questions, but with a good trip there is no question.

I'm not knocking the horse, but exactly what "grain" did he run against in the Florida Derby? Certainly not the pace, and I don't see much if any track bias that day either.
