Feel free to jump on me if I am missing something here but has anyone ever looked at the way the trainers and the jockeys operate as the reason for these fatalities instead of always blaming the track surface.

I don't follow California racing except for some Del Mar in the summer but when I do see it I am always surprised by how fast they work these horses. 5f in 1:00 is a slow work in California. I see :57 or :58 a lot

This plus the all out driving a soon as the gate opens that seems to happen in every sprint could cause these injuries.

I also think that there is pressure to race by the owners because of the cost involved in keeping a horse in training in Southern California.

Are these not big factors in the breakdown rate or is it really the track surface?

About the break downs, it has seem to me there are more break downs from when I first started to follow the races a few years ago.
Exactly.

What person is going to start a new topic because they lost money on a race?

This surface has more problems than it should have given the money they put into it.

Good Lord...can someone please tell me what happened...horse broke down after the wire? I assume, the horse was put down...I see mention of Martin Garcia...is he OK? Was he riding for Baffert....please, some details...this is f'n horrible...again...
I think I agree with some of the members here...shut that damned place down...Calif. is just a hard luck, no luck place...with all the technology we have now and still, they cannot get it right

I'm dying to know, too. Plus, I can't find an update on Emile Ramsammy riding at Woodbine who also had a huge accident and I think--I'm not sure--but I think they, too had to put the horse down.

Garcia is fine, he didn't need to go to the hospital. The horse had a sizeable lead in midstretch when he broke down badly and had to be euthanized.

Good point s you make in your post...SPEED kills in everything,Anytime you have anything going as fast as you can whether it be man or machine something has to give. You will learn or see that speed horses will have different problems then a horse that relaxes and chugs along. All a horse has to do is hit one of his l legs going that speed knocking him off rhythm and causing a horrible breakdown.I lost a filly this winter at Tampa who was in front and snapped her leg..Not a pimple on her,People are quick to blame the track when in fact its really the horses with the problems .You will never hear a trainer of a brokedown horse tell everyone that he had a bad leg..Thats why he broke it.Granted sound horses break down,They all have their way of going. If you have rode as much as me,You would understand.Look at the headon videos,Lots of horse cause the own demise by their way of travelling brought on by their conformation.

Its a tough game. I was walking into the clubhouse after the race and a father was leaving with his young daughter who was in tears.

That was a horrific spill -- Garcia was catapulted off his mount, as the horse crumpled hard and somersaulted. RIP Tokubetsu.

Glad to hear Garcia is OK, I don't think he rode the rest of the day, did he?

The sooner Frankie's goes out of business, the better off we will be.

This is the second Baffert horse that brokedown suddenly in front of the grandstand this meet. The other was a stakes horse that won over a half million.(cannon bone she survived)Last year there was 3 breakdowns on maintrack half way thru the meet it ran very safe but as mention in these posts there was hindend injures. One thing i have learned from watching Southern cal racing for 30 years, hearing complaints from trainers is nothing new no matter what surface they plan to laydown. My question is what is the norm for breakdowns in last 30 years? Can we compare it to Turf Paradise or Lone Star?
