I was terribly wrong; only SCOTUS can save Jersey racing and thats a Jim Dandy-like longshot.

Heres to hoping they get casinos up north. If not, we could Jersey racing disappear. I just don't see how long Monmouth can hang on since they were really banking on the sports betting. Even with the casinos, they would only get a very small percentage but every little bit helps. Meadowlands will become a Nascar track

Well not much news.

SCOTUS has asked for the Solicters general opinion on the case.

On hold until opinion is filed.

20 times it has asked the sg for their opinion-case has been taken 10 times.

50-50

Both sides on the case met with the acting SG, who opinion should be filed with SCOTUS next month.

Look the problem remains is there is just no money to be made. Consequently, no way to grease the skids. Sports betting is an amenity...nothing more. Most casinos in Las Vegas belong to one of the three or four main consortiums, they trade off reduced dollars of potential profits for no risks.

Now that you can bet on you iphone instate, expect that most sports books will shrink considerably.

The real question is how do you bridge the gap between now and 2018 revenue wise? Opening the Hillsborough OTW facility diluted the Woodbridge facility. Now a reduction in racing days at Monmouth Park, huge purse cuts and MP is going to survive all of this until the revenue stream appears out of thin air? All while the NJ bred foal crop has become near extinct. Those running the MP ship are in choppy waters right now with no real answers on how to keep racing in NJ competitive let alone surviving.

Both Hillsborough and Woodbridge are licensed by the New Jersey Thoroughbreds Horsemen's Association. 2015 woodbridge did $67.4 million and 2016 did $60.8 million. Hillsborough did $1.7 million in 2015 when they first opened and $11.2 million in 2016 so combining the two they did better in 2016 but certainly took some steam out of Woodbridge. Still a far cry from 2012 when Woodbridge did $86.8 million. Then again, that was the same year bayonne opened and really hurt them after that.

I agree with you on Monmouth. Cherish it while you can. I havent missed an opening day in 21 years and will be skipping my graduation ceremony here in order to make it. Have to keep my priorities straight.

Monmouth is terminal. There's no way around it. They could race another 5-10 years but there's simply nothing that can be down to pull out of this tailspin. It crashes sooner or later.

Look at whole chessboard...

Falling overall foal crop, almost no NJ-bred crop, casino bills failed massively, simulcasting handle down, living racing fading, sports betting isn't enough to move the needle and you can never forget the state is horrible financial situation so the idea of new revenue streams for the industry is never happening.

You add all that together and its impossible to see something happening that creates long-term healthy horse racing in NJ.

They'll become Suffolk. They'll run a real meet for a bit. A fake, tiny meet for a bit. Followed by no meet. Then Toll Brothers will unveil "The Estates at Monmouth Fields" distinctive homes start at just under a million dollars.

Darby bought the Hillsborough building formerly a steakhouse that went bust and then leased it to the horseman for the use as an OTW under the racing commission guidelines. The reason the building didn't open on time was due to how the lease was structured. The fact that no other OTWs have opened it makes one believe they aren't as profitable as they once were, as you supplied those numbers in your post to back up that claim. There is a mistrust brewing between the horseman and Darby. This will play out all meet long. What is the impact? Several prominent trainers aren't returning to MP, Eddie Broome is one of them.
What is the future for racing in NJ? According to Pickle it will be like Suffolk, which he is dead wrong but he has his own opinion and that is fine. My take is the state will eventually get the VLTs(under the NJ lottery commission and no vote is needed) into both MP and the Meadowlands which will give enough monies to both tracks to operate in the black.
