Ed King
The guitarist from the early days of Skynyrd passed away at his Nashville home. Gary Rossington is the only one left. Ed wrote the music to Sweet Home Alabama and also Incense and Peppermint when he was with the Strawberry Alarm Clock. The riff from Sweet Home Alabama is one of the best known in rock music. Here is an interview from 10-12 years ago.

Sorry to hear - he was very good.
Great documentary on AXS TV about Skynyrd and he is featured in a lot of it.

Believe SHA was one of the few songs in which he was a co-writer. Him leaving the band may have saved his life when the plane crashed a couple years later.
Rest in Peace Ed.

Rest in peace. Skynyrd was a great band and he was a piece of the puzzle, an experienced Californian placed with a bunch of rowdy Southerners.

Leon Wilkerson left the band shortly before they recorded their first album. Ed King played the bass parts on their first album. Ronnie Van Zant said Ed was the worst bass player he had heard. Leon soon rejoined and Ed stayed as 3rd guitarist. Then he and Rossington wrote "Sweet Home Alabama". They are saying it is Ed who counts 1-2-3 to start the song. RIP Ed.

David Spade does an old routine where he says Skynyrd only did two songs - Free Bird and Not Free Bird
I saw them in Buffalo at Rich Stadium when they were at the very top of the charts. They filled the stadium. That was one of the most unruly crowds I ever saw.

In July 1977 I was visiting my cousin in NoCal and we went to see Skynyrd at the Oakland Coliseum. It was wall to wall with people. Steve Gaines had just settled into the 3rd guitar part. At the end of Free Bird it seemed like he and Allen were not going to stop. Three months later they were gone. That show is a memory that is fresh in my mind. RIP Ed, Steve, Cassie, Ronnie, Allen, Leon and Billy.

Only Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie died in the crash. Allen and Billy died years later from other causes. Gary still plays with them. Not sure about the bass player what became of him. Both pilots died in the crash also. The plane was a pile of shit with a bad engine, and on top of that they ran out of fuel. Was Ronnie that insisted they use the plane. All the others were against it.

Leon Wilkeson was the bass player and he died several years ago from more or less natural causes. Artemis Pyle, the drummer, is still around.
