"Newbie" Past Performance Question - Surface

On past performances, a circle around the letter "T" means main turf track, a square around the letter "T" means inner turf, a square around a dot means inner dirt, and a circle filled with an "X" means moved from turf to dirt.

So what does the letter "A" for a surface mean?

I believe that's the symbol for an all weather track.

That's not what I read.

Polytrack® is a unique brand of synthetic surfaces that is revolutionizing the racing and equestrian industries around the world.

A circled X now means moved from Turf to Main Track. But the handicapper must keep in mind whether that Main Track is Dirt or Synthetic.

Had I looked a little closer, I would have seen that!

Good luck, win lots tomorrow!

I typically don't use the DRF ... just out of curiosity, what is the symbol for dirt to turf?

I remember a day at Woodbine in the late 70's I think, that every race on the card was moved to turf because of a hole in the track.

Not sure what symbol was used.

Yup. Originally, all the races off turf got a circle with an X, and all main tracks were made of dirt. We all got used to that meaning off turf and onto dirt because of that. No new symbol was made to show a race off the turf and onto a synthetic track. It's the same symbol. So it really is Off Turf to Main Track, regardless of what that main track is made of. Not sure if it the fault of documentation, or the fault of horseplayer lore, in assuming all of those are off turf & onto dirt anymore.

So watch out for those off-turf races at SA, HOL, DMR, AP, KEE, WO. Those are off the turf and onto Synthetic. (No turf course at TP & PID to be a factor there.)

Examples on the BC Card for Saturday:

Race 3 # 11 El Gato Malo

26Dec08 Race at SA has circle with X, so was a turf race moved to main track, which is synthetic

Race 6 #6 Courageous Cat

3May09 Race at BEL has circle with X, so was turf race moved to main track with is dirt.
