Del Mar is about 20 minutes from the Zoo. Del Mar has a nice facility called Surfside Race Place. If you like good food the Pampelmousse (the horse was named after this place) grill is down the street. http://www.pgrille.com/

Red Tractons is also right there.

Surfside has a hotel deal at a nice place in La Jolla. There are a lot of good restaurants withing 200 feet of the hotel. I think you have to mention Surfside Race Place to get the deal.

Our host hotel — the beautiful Regency La Jolla!

Take advantage of our host hotel rate at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla Double occupancy only $99.00 when reserved a minimum of three weeks in advance.

I don't know the distance from Simi Valley to Santa Anita or Hollywood Park. Santa Anita will be running live so it's worth it to go there. Hollywood Park isn't in the best of areas and since there's no live racing I'd stay away.

There's a map on the lower half of the page.

Depending upon where in Simi Valley it's about 50 miles to Santa Anita. 1-2+ hours depending on traffic. 118 to the 210 just east of Pasadena.

Don't forget to double your travel time from what you normally use in Pittsburgh.

and maybe triple it in rush hour

It can take as little as 1 to more than 2 hrs depending on traffic. There's a tunnel on the 210 at Pasadena that can back up to a standstill of more than 1/2 hr. Been there, done that.

Pull on the sidewalk.

When I was in Rio it was popular for the thugs in the favelas to roll down, block the tunnels and rob every car stuck.

That poor rental car. I beat he life out of it.
