My season at the Fair Grounds (2021-2022)
In retirement, I get to spend winter down in New Orleans. Luckily, this year I got a media pass to get around the Fair Grounds all winter. I interviewed many individuals and have a summary of my stay in the video link below.
The track photographer shot the famous John Henry/Bart finish. The assistant clerk of scales grew up with Shane Sellars, Calvin Borel, Eddie D and Randy Romero. Aubrie Green has the second most wins for a female jockey this year and she gave me a good long interview. So many great memories for me.

I saw some of your videos. Very good work... I enjoyed them. And you got to eat NOLA food... yum!

Thanks Ranchwest
You are right, the food down here is mighty tasty. Handicapping, eating well and getting out to the track as often as possible is a heck of a nice way to spend the winter.
I'm from Chicago and it sounds like this was a particularly nasty winter (cold, snow, ice) even this week, still in the 40-50s. We head back to Chicago May 1st. I've already had approval to get out to Hawthorne and do more of the work that I started.

Thanks sir.
I hope that when the time comes, that you and others get to enjoy a retired life like mine. I resisted going into retirement and now wonder why I didn't retire earlier.

Fair Grounds is on my bucket list. I haven’t been there yet. Looks beautiful. Plus, the quality of the racing was always pretty good, but it seems to be improving.

Wanna hear crazy?
I've been to Evangeline Downs, Delta Downs, and Louisiana Downs. Never been to Fair Grounds. Been to New Orleans multiple times as well.

Loved it Mick.
I spent my whole life going to scores of tracks. Somehow I now find myself 4 hour drive from a track. Hopefully that will be remedied in the near future.
Thanks for the great feel of actually being there!

The major virtue of the Fair Grounds is that its configuration provides an incontrovertible argument in favor of Oaklawn installing a turf course.
The Fair Grounds turf course has 814-foot turns. Only Hawthorne, at 806 feet, has tighter turns on its turf course.
If Oaklawn installs a 7-furlong turf course, its turns would be ... drum roll, please ... 825 feet - and if Oaklawn installs the same 9/10ths of a mile (7 furlongs plus 132 feet) turf course that Golden Gate Fields has (and last Saturday they ran 14 horses in the San Francisco Mile) the turns on the turf course would be 846 feet.
The bottom line is that no track is really and truly a first-class track unless it has a turf course.
