Bill did a good job. It's a lot of work. I've never done an online newsletter but I've published newsletters sold through the mail and for about a year I published a weekly newspaper (Action Weekly) that covered racing, sports, and casino gambling. The tough thing is, even if you get some help from freelance writers, you have to do most of the work yourself and it is a lot. And with HRU he published more than once a week when there was something going on during the week, such as a big sale or weekday race.

Pandy, do you know if there is something similar we harness players can use as a substitute newsletter?

I don't. I'm tempted to start my own but I would do picks as well as reporting but I would have to have some sort of subscription fee.

Just finished reading the last issue. If I didn't get this from Bill Finley, my harness racing press/news would have been non-existent.
I don't get it. The sport is in dire need of exposure and Finley was providing it. Hell, certain harness tracks should have paid Finley themselves for what he was doing.

It is a shame that the sport could not support that publication. For whatever reason, they passed up a golden opportunity to promote their racing product.
Just like the director being removed in Indiana, those in power seem to thrive on getting their own edge of things instead of creating a level playing field.
Those are just two aspects of why harness racing is in a decline. Look to PA where the gambling revenue from racing is not enough to support the testing and costs of the racing commission to the point that the state was going to shut racing down in November unless the sport infuses 9.2 million into the program. Apparently the negotiations have taken a positive turn as I have not seen anything on line or print about the pending closures. If there was no racing, they would not be able to open the slot machines or table games.
Some in Harrisburg blame it on racing itself not looking in the mirror as they are the people that put in place the 35% maximum retention rate for exotic bets. They are also the ones that changed the definition of a net pool going from the Total pool minus winning wagers multiplied by the retention rate resulting in the net pool that will be returned to the number of wagers. It is now considered a Total pool minus the Total Pool multiplied by the retention rate returned to the winning tickets. Difference being our winning wagers are also taxed by the retention rate.
Slots were supposed to be the savior of racing. It might have been if not for those in Harrisburg who under Gov Rendell, took money from the horse fund for the general fund use that was limited to one year when they amended the Act 71 (slot bill) to add table games. Gov Corbett made it permanent and current Gov Wolf has not addressed that problem yet but given the lack of a state budget I can see he has his hands full.
I am sure whatever state you reside there are other problems. One thing is certain, HarnessRacingUpdate gave us hope and brought the fans together and that had to be a good thing for the sport. Shame those that benefit most from their being in operation didn't see their value.

It's tough enough when you have subscriptions, but to rely on advertising dollars is even worse. The only companies in harness racing that advertise regularly are the breeders or horse sellers.

That's understandable.
If the on line publication cannot attract paid advertising, the person doing to the work would rightly expect compensation for their work. That compensation would come in the form of a subscription fee...
