=((C2-INT(C2))*2+INT(C2)

So if cell C2 is 22.1, this formula (placed in another cell) will return 22.2.
Suppose I'm adjusting it already manually before I enter it? For example, the actual fraction is 23 2/5 seconds. This horse lost 4 lengths from call to call. I would enter the internal fraction as 24.1 instead of a 23.6 (using 1/5 second for every length gained / lost). Since I'm doing it consistently for every fraction of every runner, doesn't it become relative?

I realize that EXCEL is not recognizing that I am using 1/5 seconds and therefore returning averages with decimals higher than (.4). But to me, a 23.6 is the same as a 24.1. Am I still incorrect here.

BTW...I appreciate this conversation

If you manually calculate the 23 2/5 and recognize the 4 lengths behind as 24.1, that should work. However, if you enter 23.6 it will calculate your average incorrectly.

No...I convert it in my head to 24.1 and then enter it.

That's what I meant, I worded it incorrectly. You are correct.

I am going to record the IFs from the 3 most recent races at todays distance. For 6 furlongs, i will use 1st Q, 1st Q to 2nd q, and 2nd Q to finish. My excel program will average out all the calls to get an average fraction- horizontal analysis. It will also average out each call point of the 3 races to get an E, M, and L average- vertical analysis.

I will also have an overall average for all fractions recorded from the 3 races. How I will use this info is still to be determined.

Any thoughts?
I've tried something very similar in the past and it can work well, although the danger is that your treating all the horses the same regardless of what stage in their careers they're at. I found more success by weighing it towards recency when it comes to young horses who are still developing and also for older horses who have seen better days.

I am only going back within this year to use races. If there are too many horses without 3 at or near the distance in the past year, then I am skipping the race.

I'm anxious to see how this does at Mahoning Valley where a lot of the races are 6f and 1 mile.
