It’s fitting that Mr. D. won’t be there today to put a nice bookend on the story of Illinois racing that he got to write

You are correct. My post was premature. It is my analysis, but too early to be positive.

This is also why racinos are almost the most profitable because they don't spend their money on infrastructure that loses money.

Do you know anybody who is an avid horseplayer who never attended a live race? The chances of gaining new customers based solely on a TV product is essentially zero.

You are both correct. That is why the sport is dying.

It depends. Is the horseplayer mainly interested in "making money"...or is he more interested in participating in the "majesty" of the game? I know several "avid" poker players who have never stepped foot inside a land-based cardroom.

The sport is dying because the other available forms of gambling are more attractive to the majority of the gambling public. It isn't a matter of getting people to attend the live meets...the vast majority of the confirmed gamblers have already attended horse racing's live meets. But they haven't found the game to their liking...and they have drifted off to somewhere else.

They could get it if they want it, but ownership isn't real smart. I heard that want to make a trade for Trushitsky.

I agree that other forms of gambling are more attractive even for the majority who have attended live racing. But I doubt racing would survive for very long as strictly a studio sport.

Most poker players learn how to play in home games with their buddies before venturing out to a cardroom or online game. To jump straight into online race betting is far more intimidating for those with little race knowledge.

Imo, the path forward has to involve the one thing horse racing's brain trust has been completely unwilling to try:

A concerted effort to make the gambling aspect of horse racing far more attractive to the general public than it currently is.

Start with:

Lower takeout.

A modern/secure Tote System fast enough to render odds and payoffs in something close to real time.

Regulators who aren't afraid to hand out penalties with teeth to those caught cheating through the use of drugs.

Times have changed. There are plenty of penny-ante games online for the poker novice to get his feet wet, with practically no fear. And I see nothing "intimidating" about dishing out a few $1 horse-bets from the comfort of one's own home.

Not intimidating if you are playing lucky numbers or horses that look pretty.

Would a fast Tote System ever do more than report the bad news of the last second odds-changing large bet quicker than it currently does?
