Will SA run all 14 in that stake on the grass or do they usually scratch some of the outside entries?

#10 has been scratched -- the rest are listed to run.

Feb 23 schedule

Hope schedule maker notices that Fair Grounds has four graded stakes with large fields. Risen Star has 14 starters plus 1 AE. Gulfstream has two graded stakes with large fields including Fountain of Youth.

That will still leave 2 races for 5k & 8k claimers at Parx, Turf Paradise, etc.

Seriously, casual, weekend players like me don't chase bottom rung horses at bottom rung tracks. Parx has horrendous takeout as does Penn.

Give us some quality. Plus if this if we're going lower level. Let us have one contest with nighttime tracks such as Delta Downs, Chuck Town, Penn, Sam Houston, etc.

Full fields override stakes races...whenever there is a stakes race with a full field and no heavy favorite, I put it in.

If a stakes race has 6 horses and one of them is 6-5 on the morning line, then no, I'm not going to use that race, and would rather use a full field, competitive $5,000 claimer from wherever...

Anyone playing this contest for any length of time should realize this by now.

PA - you're doing a very good job.
A variety of distances, classes, surfaces and ovals test whether or not we are up to muster each week.
But, no matter how good you do, someone will always pipe up with what they think is a better idea.
In my own play, I don't bother betting races with fields of less than 8, except in horizontal exotics where they sometimes can't be avoided.
To date, you've basically been able to present challenges with 8 or more.
I applaud that.

Thanks for reading and acknowledging my post with response.

Competitive $5k claimers? Now, that's an oxymoron.

This is Chatter thread and I was expressing my suggestion/opinion. You don't think your last sentence is a bit heavy-handed?

Each to their own....

I believe the choice of races has been just fine this year, as it was in previous contests. Certainly, some players stick mainly to higher class races when doing their handicapping and wagering. If that is your M/O, that's fine. It's hard to beat the spectacle of high class stakes horses running for the big purses.

However, that is not realistic when it comes to choosing races for the purposes of handicapping contests.
Full fields and parity are the order of the day.
Sure, I would rather handicap a G1 on the turf than a 12+ runner $5K claimer.
That's just me, though. You have to have a level playing field, and making the races as tough as possible for everyone, regardless of the conditions of the race, is the optimum situation, imo.

Keep up the good work, PA.

Oh, and btw, spreading the races over much more than 5 hours on a Saturday is not fair to the scorers.
I'm sure they have better things to do than tally our points for close to half of their waking day - and on a weekend, too.

I agree. Also further to what I said above players should realize that picking the races to play has a time consuming element to it as well.
First of all the weather has to be considered.
Then races with sufficient entries have to be found.
Various distances must be brought in as well as different track surfaces.
On top of that the whobet2day site has to be reviewed to make sure that the past performances are availble there.
Of course time of race has to be taken into account as well.
I'm probably missing something, but just what I've said above takes some time, energy and thought.

Gulfstream Park "FOY" Race 11

Just heard SKY CAPTAIN is a likely Scratch.

And the Trainer of FALLING SKY is discussing with the owner of possibly Scratching out of the FOY also..... FALLING SKY has post 10 and with the scratch likely of SKY CAPTAIN, that would put F S in post 9 with one horse to his outside.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

VIOLENCE is the horse to beat... but he is coming off the bench......that is why so many jumped into this race to try to beat him now.

With the possibly for seeing two horses scratched, expect to see MAJESTIC HUSSAR on the lead with his speed.. taking the field as far as he can on a Speed favoring Gulfstream Park race track. Two turns and the distance is the only BIG question mark.

Enjoy the Derby Trail Races today...FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH here at Gulfstream Park and THE RISEN STAR at Fair Grounds.

Spiral Stakes

Well, PA's job picking the races for this Saturday is slightly easier than usual.
The Spiral at TP is automatic, I would think.

If it is included, I know I'll be using my trusty dart to finalize selections.
I shouldn't give my secret methods away, though......
