from the article: On Twitter, users are attacking Walczak with the narrative that taxes are higher in Texas for the middle class than in California. Walczak destroys that myth.

No he doesn’t when you consider the tax burden. In California the middle 60% have a tax burden of 8.9%. In Texas the tax burden of the same group is 9.4%.

There’s also the matter of comparing the tax burden of the middle class with that of the wealthy. In California the tax burden of the middle class is 72% of the burden of the very rich. In Texas it is 303%, or four times as much.

I hear many are headed to Austin. If that's the case, aside from being somewhat cheaper, they should have just stayed at home.

Truth is, property tax here is enormously high. Our Sunnyvale home's annual taxes run $9,000 +. Our mesquite home's taxes run almost 5k. The Sunnyvale amount will go up considerably since we're being re appraised.

Sounds like I'm trying to scare off people from coming but I'm not. Check out your counties appraisal district before purchasing

I might add... the housing situation here is chaotic. Probably is everywhere. If you're living in town and don't own, i feel for you. Rent for young folks here is excessive. Supply and demand. A year behind on construction because of the coronavirus fear porn has the younger folks in a bind.

And as a texan you probably already know, appraisals are catching up fast. We looked at a house in Angelina County this weekend, the appraisal is currently 179k. Couldn't belive it because the house is worth every penny of 350k. Realtor told us "don't worry, it'll appraise on the rolls at over 350k next year"

We put in a full bid cash offer, turned down. No counter. A higher cash bid was accepted the same day. The market is fkn nuts right now

Those are quite cheap compared to where Mosty lives, even though he rents. $250k homes where I live in Illinois(north suburbs)have property taxes of $10-$12k/year. I’m guessing both of your homes are worth more than that but maybe I am wrong.

Only one is. The Sunnyvale home last summer was worth 645k (we sold to a family from the Seattle area, with conditions we rent the house out for $1 a month for 12 months. They wanted their kids in the Sunnyvale school district, they're currently renting in Murphy) We have to be out by September 30. We needed that 12 month period to wrap up the sale of the mesquite house, and the wife wanted to teach 1 more year= bad idea

The mesquite house on zilliow shows at 237k, but our realtor says he'd ask for no less than 290k. That number is shockingly high to me. While the immediate neighborhood is very safe , a half mile up the road is a war zone. 2 murders in the past month, one was an on duty cop shot down in cold blood. It's Mogadishu like around town.

Taxes and government fees keep climbing in California while the standard of living goes down. The cost of food, gasoline, and utilities are about the highest in the country.

My house is appraised at just under 300k. I fought with the county every year because the appraisal was going up huge every year. I would usually split the appraisal increase with them. But this last year the prices in my neighborhood took off and the comps around me are right at 300k. Including the house next door at 312k. Sold in 5 days. I didn’t fight this year. I am a few years away from any of the discounts. They still have it appraised under 280k

I paid 196k 6 yrs ago. My house is a little bigger and a sun room has been added. I expect to list it at 320k this spring.

My taxes here in Montgomery county are $4800 a year. I own it outright so I stroke a check every December for it. My tax rate is 2.4%
