Formula to find fractional times of non winners?

Sorry, newbie question here: what is the formula to calculate the fractional times of non winners? Say I am looking at horse x that finished eighth in a 6F race. Winner's times listed as
22.3-46.3-59.1-1:12.4
and horse X point of call was:
8 (10 off)-8 (15 off)-8(21 off)-8(37 off)
How do I calculate the fractional times for horse X?

I know some PPs list this, but was hoping to learn the formula so I can pick up a DRF and figure it.
Thanks.

Hello RStetson and welcome to PA!

First thing you need to do is decide what you are going to use for the time value of a beaten length. I use .167 myself, but others may have different values, As long as you are consistent....

You will probably see that .20, or 1/5th of a second is used by some programs and by BRIS PP Generator.

For the first fraction, 22.3, and the horse 10 lengths back.
Multiple the 10 beaten lengths by .167 and get 1.67. Add the 1.67 to the 22.3 and the horse;s time was 23.97

Then, 46.3 beaten 15 lengths - 15*.167 = 2.505 + 46.3 = 48.80

Then 59.1 beaten 21 lengths - 21*.167 = 3.51 + 59.1 = 102.61

And finally, 112.4 beaten 37 - 37*.167 = 6.18 + 112.4 = 118.58

The horse's second fraction is 48.80- 23.97 = 24.83
The final fraction is 118.58 - 48.80 = 29..78

23.97 48.80 102.61 118.58
If you used 1/5 a second, it would be:
24.30 49.30 103.30 119.80

Big difference.

I am assuming the 22.3 is 22 and 3 tenths, not fifths.
If it is fifths, you need to change it to tenths, so it would be 22.6 46.6 59.2 112.8 then go from there.

Hope that helps.

Hi RS. I don’t want to burst any bubbles, but the answer to your question may not be as straight-forward as many may think.
You might want to take a peek at a related topic:

Just to be clear the times listed are usually those of the horse in front at any point of call. It could be the winner or 2 or 3 different horses depending how the race ran. The final of course is the time of the winner. Lot's of programs will do this for you. I haven't used Formulator (DRF product) in a long time but they have multiple filters to show the horses times or the pace times. Hopefully this was just an example and not a real horse you are looking at. Any horse who starts out 10 lengths back and gets further back as the race progresses is either hopelessly outclassed or might do best at giving pony rides at kids birthday parties.

BRIS pp GENERATOR gives you the fractions 4,6,8 and final, so you only have to excel the 2, and equisim6.0 gives you FPS. I use to do it all by hand. brisnet uses .16 for a length. use to take me about 10min to do a race

Equisim will display a horse's fractions in the pp if you select that option.
