BC Handle Down 10%
Would the on track handle affect it that much?

Why is that Greg?
The BC can't be compared to TC events. It's a day for horseplayers. We haven't stopped playing. I'm not sure what the on-track numbers are normally for the BC, and keep in mind a lot of it is the BCBC which still went on this year ( it would be very interesting to see that number year to year ), but I would guess it's around 10% without the BCBC.
We were talking about it earlier today and I guessed around this number but would not have been surprised if it was closer to last year's number. Not saying it was bad but it seems like a reasonable result.

The difference is on track handle. It’s about $5-6.0m difference.

Yeah. Plus off track handle at all the racetracks that aren't open. For instance Del Mar would be contributing in a normal year.

According to an article posted on horseracingnation.com, here are the 2019 numbers.
Friday 11/1/19....Attendance 41,243, on track handle...$1,123,620....Now, I will have to admit, that number looks low. Atypical of SA's normal $150 per capita on track handle.
Saturday 11/2/19 Attendance 67,811 On track Handle $6,340,351.
So let's say the numbers are correct. It would appear the loss of on track handle would not be enough to reduce overall handle by 11%( reported by horseracingnation.com)

What about if you add in all the other tracks and simulcast facilities that are closed to spectators?

I was in Erie, PA a few weeks ago.
I stayed at a hotel across the street from Presque Isle Downs.
The casino was open. The simulcasting area was open for both live racing and out of town. The only restriction was spectators could not go out side to the apron to watch the races.
I don't know if this is applicable to other facilities.
Hoosier Park in Indiana allows a limited number of attendees.

Per ..Not exactly a huge vote of confidence from Shug.
I'm going with
....How often can we get 7-1 with Brown/Velazquez ....Last time out, she had to ease up, then go again. on paper is the horse to beat...What concerns me is despite her record, just 5/2.

I agree.
When I used to hang out in NYC OTBs, neighborhood people I knew for years only came out to bet the Triple Crown and the Breeder's Cup. That's it. Many of those very casual players never bothered to get ADW accounts. Maybe their handle was only $100 for the day, but there were loads of them. The OTBs in NYC would overflow with people like that on BC days even if not at the same level as Kentucky Derby day.
That money may be lost forever, but some of the remaining OTBs, simulcast centers, racetracks etc.. that normally still take bets are closed or very limited. So I suspect a lot of causal money that would have bet in normal times did not. A lot of people don't care enough to have an account, but they are willing to take a quick walk or drive to hang out and make a few bets once or twice a year.

I can assure you I know of at least 4 horseplayers who stopped playing. Unfortunately all 4 lost their jobs this past year and are in no position to bet on anything. Tough situation to be in considering they love the game . I suspect there are a lot of people in their situation...obviously because of covid.

tough to bet BC friday at in the middle of the day for anyone out west, i mean for those that work that is, had to cost a few %
No onsite handle was sure to bring it down some.
pandemic.
I heard Saturday was only down slightly. All in all seems like a pretty good to me all things considered.

Personally, I thought the handle was pretty good given the conditions.
I've been saying all along "there are a lot of moving parts" in the handle now that make it much tougher to isolate the overall trend. Early on some were a positive when limited tracks were open and sports/gambling competition was lower, but now most are short term negatives.
I didn't see the final Belmont numbers yet, but I think I read they got off to a great start.

I was offtrack Friday at Scioto Downs and maybe they were 40-50% capacity. Saturday, I was at Dayton Raceway and there were only 20-25 bettors on the first floor. There were several more on the second floor. I have never been there before for a big event so I can't judge.
I would say the Covid kept the off track attendance down as it has really heated up in Ohio.

I agree, it’s true upstate too. On those days they would have extra security people parking cars because the Simulcasting lot would fill up. Inside there would be extra beer stands and all bartenders were working. There were people you didn’t see for years or since the last big event that showed up. They weren’t really horse players and it was the only days they played. People like that are not interested in an account. I know this for a fact because if you're with this type of fan at home they will want to put action thru your acct. They definitely lose a percentage losing some of these central points of Simulcast and OTB. Most of these casuals will still watch on tv without betting at all since they don’t have access.
They’ll ask you who you like..... then they’ll want you to put it thru.... cause you’re there with them. Some will even call you. Been there, done that . Otherwise they’re not betting at all
