big *** fans
Did you notice that NBC called it "Big Fans", but the track feed spelled it out?
Reminiscent of when CBS used to insist on calling the Marlboro Cup "the Cup".

Was watching on TVG and they all said it except for one of the female hosts didn't/wouldn't, either Christina or Gabby.

CBS didn't exactly "insist" on calling it the Cup. They called it the Marlboro Cup until cigarette advertising was banned from television, at which time they weren't legally allowed to refer to it as the Marlboro Cup. It wasn't some decision they made based on having objections to the name.
The legal profession takes a hit with virtually every one of your posts.

Andy, THAT'S TOTALLY FALSE!
There was NEVER a government ban on saying word Marlboro on TV. Any such ban would violate the First Amendment! And Virginia Slims' famous tennis tour kept on using its name on TV, as did the Winston Cup NASCAR series.
CBS made "the Cup" decision on its own.
Andy, you really need to change your tone. You are not a lawyer, you are a handicapper. Stop insulting people when you are outside your lane.

Given Andy completely got the law wrong, and gratuitously insulted me while he was doing it, I don't think you should encourage him.

I don't have the competence to know whether or not, you, or Andy, happen to be correct on that point.
And, I am aware of that.

As am I, Andy.
But the only way you are ever going to know the law is if they open a law school in the clubhouse at Aqueduct.
And notably, you didn't actually respond to the substance of my post-, if not mentioning Marlboro was "legally required", how did the NASCAR Winston Cup stay on television so long?

There WAS a ban on cigarette advertising, and naming a race is advertising. IF someone other than the ciggy people named it that, it probably would have been OK as it was not an advertising tool. But who knows. Maybe they decided it was better to err on the side of caution and not use the Marlboro name.
Were you there?

On TVG, Simon and Todd were talking about the Dirt Mile, and Simon was making a point, I believe about a horse from an outside post, and he said, "It was a big ask for him." And Todd replied, Big what?

I actually do remember what happened, and yes, CBS made the decision. The ban at the time only covered commercials, not event sponsorships.
And importantly, the government has no power to impose a ban on nominative references to tobacco on television. The First Amendment exception for commercial speech applies only to speech that "does no more than propose a commercial transaction", i.e., advertisements. And even in that area, speech can only be banned if it is misleading.
Calling an event by its name is fully protected speech. Eventually major events voluntarily separated themselves from tobacco sponsorships, and the tobacco companies agreed to drop sponsorships in their settlement agreements. But there has never been a law prohibiting the TV networks from referring to an event by its name. CBS did this themselves because they didn't want to say the name of a tobacco product on the air. (I believe in the last couple of years they carried the race they reversed themselves and said "Marlboro Cup", BTW.)

My impression watching the Breeders Cup feed Saturday was that the commentators seemed to enjoy saying Big Ass Fans as often as they could, and I noticed when the NBCSports guys didn't.
That is all; no desire to get in the middle of an Andy-dilan spat.

There's no spat. He's wrong as usual. There's no debate.
