Christmas racing

I remember when Calder used to run on Christmas day. Who here would wager on Christmas eve or Christmas day if given the option? I would not, although Christmas night could be a possibility.

I would wager on both or either. That is depending if there was a play (for me) weather permitting.

I recall on one Xmas Eve--I'm guessing it was about '92 or '93 (someone who has time to dig thru charts can verify to see if I have any brain cells left)--I stopped to bet Calder simos before heading to the family gathering.

A horse named Silent Knight ran in either the feature or the last race--absolutely HAMMERED in the odds, and, of course, won for fun as a holiday hunch.

Great memory! 12/24/92 Silent Knight gets up by a nostril in the nitecap at 7/5.

Which leads into a great boxing day card in the UK headlined by the G1 King George Chase at Kempton, then if you still can't sleep, you got the great card at Santa Anita.

Softie racing industry is going the other 363 days while millionaires and billionaires take 4 months off.

If you need some action there are a few greyhound tracks open for racing on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

On three past occasions I was traveling in South Florida to visit family on Christmas eve and Christmas day. I always went to Calder on the afternoon of X-Mas eve- so i would time my arrival as the Open House Event in Coral Gables as their many guests started to arrive. Partly because we really didn't want to work in party set up preparation...partly because we were out-of-town family guests....and mostly because it was a chance to see racing live. Once I hit a "signer" pick four at Fairgrounds I believe...... so my three nieces got a couple extra c-notes each as gifts. Their Uncle was a high roller! ha!

I'm sure it is a business decision as well. If tracks thought opening on Christmas would be profitable, they might be open.

Either way, I can say I have never bet on Christmas and I never would.

I went to Las Vegas at Christmas one year. Definitely bet the Las Vegas Bowl that year. And probably a few races at Calder too.

Also bet NFL playoff games on Xmas Day too in years gone by.

If I had kids I'm sure I would not have gone to Vegas for Xmas. But since that's not the case, I treated myself (and my wife) to a great Xmas present!

The Tropical Turf Handicap used to be known as the Christmas Day Handicap and was run on xmas at Calder until 1992.

Also a horse named Santa Claus won at Fair Grounds on xmas eve in 1976. The wire services picked up the story and it ran in all the papers around here.
