Looking at where the hotel is placed in the scheme of things is it possibly a foot in the door to a future casino?
Belmont's grandstand is dated & too large for most racing days,it could be razed, with a new smaller version placed there, with the hotel/casino expanding into the left over space.

I don't have any connections in NYRA, but I would imagine that as long as there is a Belmont Stakes, NYRA would want a large grandstand there. They make a ton of money one day a year and can close large portions of it off the rest of the time no problem.

Where is the backyard in this photo?
Is it the area at the top of the photo, just to the side of the grandstand?

What is in the area now, where the arena is going to be?

The backyard is where the planned retail village will be. The arena is planned for an area that is currently a parking lot. See link to satellite map image below (sorry I don't know how to post the picture). The point of referenced I used is the existing pedestrian tunnel, which is where Belmont Park Rd intersects w/Hempstead Turnpike behind the grandstand.

The location of the retail stores is very similar to the layout at GP but on what seems to be a larger scale. For those who have been to GP it is a great set up and keeps people coming and going during the live racing as well as those who frequent the casino and the stores and restaurants after the race card ends.

It's a great setup except for the paddock. I'm ok with whatever they do at Belmont provided they don't mess w/the paddock. Every time I watch I can't believe how they saddle at GP. Walking ring is nice but the GP paddock looks like a disaster waiting to happen!

They put up some huge planters to keep a horse from bolting into the Yard House restaurant.
