Gibson also threw 13 shutouts and 28 complete games that season, and won 22 games.
The mound was lowered more in part to the hitters than pitching. Only 5 batters in both leagues combined batted over .300 in 1968. Yastrzemski led the AL with .301.
Imo, the mound should have been left alone. Seven pitchers posted ERA's below 2.00 in '68. The year prior only Phil Niekro did it. In prior years 15 or more batters hit over .300. The height of the mound was the same throughout.
1968 was simply a unique season where pitchers threw their best collectively and hitters were overwhelmed. The mound was lowered 5 inches the following season after remaining the same since 1900.
