There is no best. A long list of great athletes.
Michael Jordan was big. Tremendous athlete and ballplayer and entertainer. You had the huge growth in the NBA and Nike, with Jordan used as their featured athlete to associate with their brand. That's significant.
Long list. Who is better? Emmit Smith or Barry Sanders or Bo Jackson? All of them. It's a matter of taste.

The same year that Magic vs. Bird in the NCAA championship played out, The Seattle SuperSonics beat the Baltimore Bullets for the NBA Championship. Here in Seattle, we watched those games on tape delay. Yes, the championship series for the NBA title was presented on tape delay in one of the participating markets. Magic and Bird came along and opened the door to prime time for the NBA. Jordan came along and blew the door off the hinges.

Agree. But 3 guys I'd have high up on any list are:
a) Jim Brown, not only the greatest power running back in NFL history, IMO, but also one of the greatest lax players ever, whose novel method of cradling his stick close to his powerful body necessitated implementation of a rule change to force players to keep the arm, stick and ball in motion at all times, known ever since as "The Jim Brown Rule"
b) Bo Jackson, simply because I saw him do things on both the football field and the baseball diamond that boggled the mind
c) Wayne Gretzky, similar to Bo, he seemingly defied the laws of physics with some of maneuvers on the ice and like Jim Brown, he was so dominant in 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 hockey that the NHL had to change the rules on implementing offsetting coincidental penalties to keep both teams at full strength, known as "The Gretzky Rule"

Wouldn't that be crazy to be that guy sitting on the hill in the background of that picture you posted of Jordan?
Can you imagine....."Hey, that's me. I remember that day."

And look at that hoop. They definitely play above the rim in that neighborhood.
That picture, of one of, if not the, greatest basketball player ever, has a thousand stories.
That wall art was done before the fence went up. You wonder who did it. The fence was altered to fit around the hoop standard also.
What a freaking cool picture.

YEARS Before the NBA changed the 'gather' rule (to highlight, and help players like Giannas Atekempo), Hakeem was innovative, in that he would 'drop step' as he gathered the pass.
He could pivot with an extra step, in a way that only guards could do at that time.
Maybe notthe greatest, but noteworthy.
