Way back in the early 80's when my weight was in proportion to my height... think the final race of the meet was 1 1/2 or 2 miles on the turf.
Horse name "Claim The Thrown" won it several years in a row.
That is what I remember & it may or may not be true.

The TuP season ends on Sunday, May 5. The last race that day is the Hasta La Vista Hcp, 1 7/8 miles on the turf.

Ahh, Claim The Throne --
I recall a time (1980-1982 or so) when Claim The Throne held most of the track records at Turf Paradise on the turf.
There used to be a neighborhood restaurant & bar named Kriskimkeel's along the west side of the strip mall adjacent to Turf Paradise at 19th Ave. & Bell.
Fyi, Kriskimkeel was Claim The Throne's sire.
Memory is a little fuzzy at this point, but but I think Kriskimkeel was by Kris S and I may have I gotten my introduction to turf breeding in that bar.

When you can't race all summer because of the heat, you're behind the 8-ball right there.
Prescott (I've been there) is nowhere near as hot. Maybe it will work out up there?
Apparently Michael Wrona thinks so.

Why would TuP want to race in the summer? Most tracks in the country are racing some time in the late spring to early fall window. The simulcast competition, especially from much bigger tracks, is huge.
TuP races from mid October to early May. Just picking a day at random, on a Tuesday in mid January, the attendance was 900 and the handle was $1.2 million.

Stop with the stereotyping. They race from Oct to May to avoid the triple digits.

He was replying to a post about how Turf Paradise should race in the summer, hence the joke.
If some people weren't getting offended they really would have nothing else to do with their days.

I never said that they should race in the summer - only that the forced absence puts Turf Paradise at an inherent disadvantage.
If only Arizona Downs installed a turf course ...

Except it doesn't because they're racing against lesser competition in the winter---if they raced in the summer no one would bet them. At least they have a chance in the winter.
