I noticed no Beyer's for the Claiming Crown races at Gulfstream, are there timing issues there?

There are figures in the Winner's Book section for the races. Where aren't you seeing them?

https://www.nyra.com/aqueduct/news/c...-mile-day-card

I have no idea how these times were derived, but they are, to be kind, not good.

"The Teletimer system initiates the timing of each race when the first runner crosses the timing beam. However, because of an auxiliary starting gate incorrectly parked on the outside fence of Aqueduct's main track during the first half of the card, the beam was not engaged, which resulted in the first three one-mile races being timed directly from the gate, without the customary run-up. The run-up that day was 54 feet from the starting gate to the first beam."

This is a quote from a Bloodhorse article about these races. When reading this, I come to the understanding that that the races were timed from when the gate opened, without the run-up.???? Do they understand that this is impossible to do.

Apparently they have a backup system which allows the timer to be activated manually because someone did this, but he activated it when the gate opened instead of when they reached what should have been the official timer thereby adding the 54 foot run-up distance to the time of the race. The race was timed as a mile and 54 feet race from a standing start.

What they must have done is calculated how long the horses would have taken to run the 54 feet from the gate to the timing device and subtracted that from the original time of the 1st quarter and then carried that over to each succeeding quarter of the race. That figure would be a guess at best unless they used the video to time the run-up and then subtracted that time from each quarter. Since the video and Trakus would not be affected by the auxiliary gate getting in the way they would be the most likely to be accurate.

Cj, when you say that you used the Cigar Mile and and some other mile races as a baseline, do you mean you used these races to get a variant that you applied to the mistimed races to correct their times?

No, I mean to establish visual baselines from video replays. Such as the 1/4 mile call comes when the leader reaches a certain point, the 1/2 mile at this point, etc. Just trying to use the poles and eyeballing it can be deceiving given the angles and amount of zoom used. Also, it established the point when timing begins, accounting for run up.

If that were the case they wouldn't have changed the incremental fractions for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter miles. They were timed electronically (and correctly) initially. Since they changed those it tells me whoever did it didn't really understand the problem in the first place and certainly didn't know how to fix it.

I see your point. Since the only problem was that they didn't have the right time for the 1st quarter it shouldn't have affected the incremental times for each succeeding quarter. The correction for the first quarter should have just been passed along through the accrued times.

In addition to the problem that the time for the run-up was included in the 1st quarter time in the original time (since it really was for a quarter mile plus 54 feet) how do they account for the fact that they were really timing from a standing start? How do they put a number to how much that added to the 1st quarter time?. They would have to use the video to get the time it took from the opening of the gate to reach the official starting beam and subtract that from the original 1st quarter split and then pass along that subtraction from the following accrued times while keeping the original correct incremental times. That seems to be what you did.
That's obviously not what they did. It would be nice if NYRA explained what they did do.

I have an article coming out later today that shows exactly how to time races from video.

Should be required viewing for any track that considers itself legitimate.

Looking forward to reading it. Where can I find this article?
