Horse Of The Year
Things are a bit up in the air, especially with would be champ Arcangelo retiring. A Classic win would likely have clinched HOY honors.
A win in the Turf should make Up To The Mark the clear winner, although he's really up against it at a new distance and taking on a stellar field. I thought they were going to opt for the Mile.
A win would give him four Grade 1's at four different distances (1m,1m1/8,1m1/4 and 1m1/2) which would be a fantastic accomplishment.
He's a very nice horse and I'm rooting for him

This is about as wide open as I can remember. Agree about Up to the Mark but if he doesn't win, I'd have to think a lot about it and I don't want to so I'll just wait for the results.
Some possibles, all not the strongest resumes...

There should be an option to not award a Horse of the Year if nobody merits it.

If Cody’s Wish wins the mile I think he’s HOY.

Don't forget about Two Phil's! According to some of the [self-proclaimed] Grand Poobah's of handicapping, even though he LOST the Kentucky Derby, he still "ran the best race" ...

Tell ya what - Up To The Mark is one damn fine horse.
Basically 3w on all turns with no cover and gave the champ a run for the money. He lost to arguably the best horse in training right now.
Likely won't win the award, but he's my HOY

I needed that finish to go the other way. But yeah, Up To The Mark ran great. So did Idiomatic in the Distaff.

HOTY
will be White Abarrio
should be Auguste Rodin
that was a relatively weak Classic, not terrible, but nothing like the very stacked field in the Turf

Tough task you have in front of you CJ.
Cody's Wish likely wins it last year if not for Flightline. He had a good year, capped with another BC Dirt Mile win. Is it good enough to stave off a great run by White Abarrio?
Thinking the head to head in the Met Mile cinches the vote and Cody gets the nod this time.

If there is no standout (and I have not done any diligence towards HOTY considerations), it's a clear shot to promote Cody's Wish.
'Feel good story'.
Even the wolves will be feeling bad about hating on Cody's Wish.

I think Idiomatic edges out Cody's Wish:
She has 3 G1s, 1 G2, 1G3 and a 2nd in a G2
Cody's Wish has 3 G1, 1 G2, 3rd in a G1. Though he is a repeat winner of BC.
I don't think White Abarrio with only 2 G1s and a 3rd in the G1 MetH is much of a campaign. He would have to be the weakest HOY ever.
This is my opinion. I'm not saying that's how the actual voting will turn out.

Based on accomplishments to me it is Idiomatic. A case could be made for Cody's Wish too, but not completely based on record.
White Abarrio is a definite no for me. His record doesn't stack up and if they give HOY based on that fact he won classic, what is the point of HOY.
And while I am at it, a huge shout out to Bill Mott. Elite Power and Cody's Wish won 20 out of their last 23 races!
