Ride on Curlin's work wasn't great today. He was being asked to go 7 furlongs.

Odd. He seemed like a happy horse a few days ago.

WILDCAT RED

Trainer Jose Garoffalo said he thought his horse worked well despite the slow time, did not want him to go too fast six days out from the race."I told Luis to go very easily and let him run just a little at the end. I liked him especially on the backstretch, he didn't want to stop. A lot of people were expecting a bullet work, but I don't need that. I need stamina, I don't need speed. He has the speed already." Wildcat Red, as tired as he seemed to be at the end of his work, did grab the bit again and try to take off when passed by another galloper near the half mile pole.

DERBY WORKS--Mike Welsch

Intense Holiday easily best of the 7 Derby workers this a.m., left mate
We Miss Artie in the dust with a :23.61 final quarter and big gallop out, 5F in 1:01.36, up 1:15.39. Had Johnny V. up. Danza also good today, edged away from Vinceremos by a length at the wire before pulling well clear on the gallop out.

Ride On Curlin okay although was hoping for a little better off big gallops this week, 7F from the 6 pole in 1:28.98, out a mile in 1:43.63.

Chitu tired late from the gate going 6F in 1:13.11 with mate Party Time.

Wildcat Red obviously not as fond of CD strip as speed favoring Gulf Park, never even tried, staggered home five eighths in 1:04.39.

It sounds to me like a LOT of horses are not working too well over the CD strip first time they try it. So I wouldn't over think this kind of thing. I'd way rather hear that some horse looks great and like he's improving because I'd like to find a horse that could be moving forward.

Churchill surface changes from morning until afternoon, from day to day. If it rains, then that's another story. Still, workouts are crucial. However, as workout information has left the shadows and is scrutinized by experts and available to everybody, it becomes less useful as good workers will be overbet. Like anything else, when the public has it, it's value decreases. Soon people will have to find a reason to pitch the good workers because they can't get the price they expected. Meanwhile, if you ignore the works, you will find it's a tough racket.

Some horses aren't good workers. You need to know that in advance. Some works are designed to go slow. There is a lot you need to know. The most misunderstood part of this game are workouts. The public is lost in this regard.
