I will never understand the logic behind, "oh they have a casino, of course they cancel"

At the most basic level, it is a missed revenue opportunity. Specific to the tracks that receive any type of subsidy from a casino, the funds are earmarked to begin with. Its not like if they don't run they can pocket the money.

It comes down to the safety of everyone involved. I am glad the point was brought up about being acclimated to the temperature. The weather in the northeast can be 70 one day, and 95 the next day with high humidity.

When I was in Arizona it was 100 degrees or more for what seemed to be 70 percent of the year and I was fine with it. Now I am back in Jersey and with this current "heatwave" of 4 days over 90, I wont leave my office/house.

Keystone/Philly Park/Parx has always been quick to cancel.

Through the 1990s and 2000s they lost money on live racing but turned a tidy profit on their Phonebet network (money they funneled overseas and didn't pay taxes on but that's an old story lost to the ages by now). So, they didn't much care if they ran live. Well, maybe on Mondays and Tuesdays they wanted to run, but certainly not on the weekends when they had more competition and handle was 1/3 of what it was during the week.

Now they make hundreds of millions of dollars on their casino and are legally mandated to run live racing. The handle they get compared to those slots purses means they're literally better off not running. But how far back would we have to go to when they cared? The 1980s? Oh, and PA Derby day now.

But the past four days have been 96 to 98 degrees with high humidity. Let the horses have a break and play one of the 30 other tracks out there.

Sorry to hijack your thread - place just irritates me. Them and Louisiana tracks don't care about horses at all usually and it gives the game a black eye so I am biased.

Ellis Park Casino just cancelled the remainder of their card due to extreme heat.

Oh wait, Ellis doesn't have a casino.

Oh snap!

... all match races because they'd only have 40 horses on the grounds.

And some races would be walkovers.
