Then tonight my older brother emailed me (subject: sharing the wealth), bragging about his top 4 stocks and all their gains, and now he's well above water from earlier losses back in 2008/2009. While not a shoeshine boy, he's no savvy trader either, and definitely fits the definition of "retail investor".
FWIW, I think just about any catalyst should knock the market over - but I have thought that now for about 12 years. Top pick on catalyst - China invades Taiwan, real shooting war for US/UK/Japan, dragging Russia, India, Australia and the Koreas into it.
Six months from now nobody will remember what was so big about Covid.
You have been warned.

Not today...lol
BTW, I agree with you. However, that was back when people were kinda clueless.
Now that people know the whole "sell when grandma starts asking about day trading," the rules have probably been flipped on their head...lol
And you get what we've been seeing lately...big up days and brand new highs.
The only thing that's going to take this market down is a "significant event." Not just smart money bailing and leaving retail holding the bag.

The QYLD mimics almost the same ups & downs as the S&P 500 over the last 2-3 years. But they charge you 7 times the expense ratio of the SPY, for the privilege of telling investors it's covered calls. The JEPI only started at the bottom of the pandemic last year, and mirrors the S&P500 as well. Their management fee is ONLY 4 times the SPY. Recession proof? They take the same risks as the overall market to my eye.

My brother's email came out of nowhere. I just had to laugh.
The Fed could pull liquidity like they did in 2008, and then blame it on Bear Sterns, err, Tesla, err China, or the unvaxxed, or what have you. I operate under the assumption that the markets don't have any organic cause of their ups and downs, and the shots are called way up the chain.
And based on that, a crash of the everything bubble will/may/should be coming soon, though there is a slight chance they crash the dollar instead and hyperinflate our way to a Reichstag moment.
In any event, the preservation of "wealth" will quickly become minimizing the loss of wealth, and I'll be truly shocked if part of the process doesn't include clamping down on retirement funds - and mandating conversions to .gov bonds.....

the general does a 1 for 8
GE just did a reverse stock split. it closed today at $100. the company and the stock has been a pos for the past 20 years. nothing has changed with that company except for them selling off their better assets to remain in business.
this is going to be my go to stock when I am ready to short the market.
