Firefighters watch as home burns to the ground
Reporter - Jason Hibbs

Story Updated: Sep 30, 2010 at 12:31 AM CDT

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. - Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won't respond, then watches it burn. That's exactly what happened to a local family tonight.

A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.

"I thought they'd come out and put it out, even if you hadn't paid your $75, but I was wrong," said Gene Cranick.

Because of that, not much is left of Cranick's house.

How do you fight fire? Pony-up $75.

To give you an idea of just how intense the feelings got in this situation, soon after the fire department returned to the station, the Obion County Sheriff's Department said someone went there and assaulted one of the firefighters.

I'm going to agree with bigmack here. I hate it when that happens. I doubt if it was a secret that you needed to pay $75 for fire protection. $75 a year does not seem an unreasonable amount.
Mr. Crannick rolled the dice and lost.
The story says the fire department watched as the house burned to the ground. I assume they were there to be sure everyone was safely out of the house. That is all they need to do.
If I understand right, Mr. Crannick is going to be on Olbermann in the next 40 minutes. Let's see what he says.

KO with his usual worthless input. Starts the interview "And now a look at what life would be like if left to the Tea Party"

Get in the basement. The TP has caused AIDS, slavery, Katrina, typhoons & indigestion.

Looks like both Maddow & Olbermann are going to lose plenty of sleep over this one.

I commend Mr. Crannick for admitting that he was misguided in his thinking about the consequences and the absence of a follow-up quote about how victimized he has been.

I must disagree with Olbermann on this one. It appears that Obion County, outside of South Fulton does not have a fire Department. People in South Fulton pay for their fire department through their taxes. People outside the city pay through an annual fee. $75 is not that much. The only thing I would say is if a person can prove need, they be allowed to pay on a monthly basis.
It does not seem that Mr. Crannick was in need. He either forgot to pay or more likely rolled the dice. Really dumb.

Even I don't think the TP has caused AIDS slavery Katrina or typhoons. Indigestion maybe. Perhaps the Tea Party can provide rollaids as part of their platform.

Forget the rollaids. The TP can do much better than mere treatment of the symptoms. They know how to get rid of the causes....MOSTY.

The guys son had a fire last year. They didn't pay it either but they put out the fire and paid the next day. This guy is just plain dumb.

Q: What did the TP have to do with the story & why did KO intro with it?
A: Because he's sniveling little fool who can't deliver any story without interjecting his snarky schtick. He really is a raging moron.

I would fire every fireman int hat lot. The stench they put on the profession is sickening. Jail is in order here. These slime balls are no better than arsonists.

Not a man among them.

Why didn't they take the money right there and then?

Maybe the concept of the theoretical "contract?" got in the way of common decency

I don't understand, I'm constantly told that people pay the federal income tax so that the fire department will come out and put out their house fire.

Many rural volunteer fire depts and severely under funded. These guys volunteer their time and risk their lives, it is not unreasonable to furnish them with the equipment they need. It is a county matter, and many just won't come up with the money. What is the alternative? By the way, how in hell is this a political issue?

This true in many rural areas of Nebraska as well. The rescue squads are often volunteer as well. Many of them are poorly funded by the counties. There are some Federal grants to help with some of the equipment, but they are never enough. A lot of them have funds raisers of various kinds during the year. Stags are popular around here. For the record I never belonged to one, but I know a lot people who have. They are real heros.

Obviously, this is Bush's fault!

Do you ask a guy for his insurance card when he was just run over by a bus, and leave him there if he doesn't have one?

Just standing there watching it burn - totally unacceptable.

The process of residents having to cough-up loot for the local FD has been in effect for 20 years. There have been scores of other homes that didn't pay and they were left to burn as well.
