And hamas is their givernment, so it is self inflicted.

Which could explain why the terrorist attack was so-thought to be a surprise and an intelligence blunder and why Egypt's forewarning was supposedly ignored. Not so!
I had this exact conversation with a friend and we came to the same conclusion as yours.

If I hadn't heard/read that Egypt had given Israel a heads-up, so to speak, the thought would never have occurred to me.

I believe they knew and just let it happen like 9/11. It gave the U.S a reason to invade Iraq even though they had nothing to do with it and this gives Israel the reason to finish this once and for all
