Who knows what conversations have taken place between Stronach & NYRA over this? But there is one certainty: Stronach wouldn’t be considering moving the Preakness without the blessing of NBC. And as people in college football have found out, it doesn’t matter what anybody else wants…if NBC wants to move the Preakness, it’s gonna move.

It was a hasty announcement.

The way I see it with this move the Triple Crown is dead. Belmont doesn't want to move and one of the races will suffer after the Kentucky Derby. Belmont moves and the gap between races becomes huge so the past records don't mean much anymore. Either way each race is probably looking after its own future anyways so the Triple Crown was probably going to be relegated to the dustbin of history.

The Belmont isn’t as important to Fox without the Preakness

What past records? The triple crown has historically moved around with 4 winners of it not running at the current schedule

With the Preakness in trouble IMO, I predict the TC will become:

Arkansas Derby
Kentucky Derby
Belmont Stakes

It makes a lot of sense money wise and fits the spread the races out narrative perfectly without messing up the rest of the season.

Great idea. Take Maryland out of the equation

The biggest problem for the horses is most of them don’t have enough bottom to come back in 2 weeks. Starting the series a month earlier won’t help the situation. The disaster with moving it to June is for New York and Fox.

Almost no horse that runs on Preakness day card runs on Belmont day card. Why is that? Because Pimlico has cheap listed stake races that don’t attract big horses.

It’s the stepchild of the three events and if they decide to move the Preakness back, they will be killing their own event because NYRA should not move Belmont day

NYRA should tell 1ST to beat it. Stay put. The Preakness undercard is dreadful, New York Showcase Day purses are higher. If NYRA does not budge what can 1ST do? The Preakness purse is lower with no resources to increase it. Cox and TAP already skip it every year so how bad does NYRA need it?

If I thought tinkering with the TC would help, I’d support tinkering. This iteration of “change hysteria” seems to me to be based on a few rough years that have nothing to do with spacing: dq’s, Covid, and Rich Strike and his “Hollywood” trainer (the horse wasn’t winning the Preakness if was run two years later). A few decades ago the talk was how the Belmont was basically a Grade II and obsolete. Horses would run in the first two and skip it. Now it’s back in style to a degree. Let’s take a breath.

If the Preakness is in trouble, The Santa Anita derby will replace it! I don't see 1st racing giving up their triple crown spot!

Santa Anita Derby
Kentucky Derby
Belmont Stakes
