VLC is open source, which means it's free as in "beer," and it is also free as in you can tinker with it and modify the source code. It is included in probably every Linux/Unix distro's repository.
Because it is open source, it is extremely unlikely to contain malware, trojans, viruses, etc., when it is obtained from it's home page or when it is downloaded from a Linux/Unix distro repository.
I think that the Videolan site might have a donations form, but they would not force anyone to pay nor is it likely that they would they make one go through download/installation steps in which donations were requested. Furthermore, there would be no crapware bundled.
The open source software world is very different from the proprietary software world.
