One way to get rid of a computer virus

http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/8/450...er-destruction

Quote:
Though the US military has been preparing itself for digital warfare, other government agencies still seem to be struggling with how to handle basic cybersecurity: last year, the Department of Commerce spent over half of its IT budget — more than $2.7 million — chasing down what appeared to be a major malware infection. The department destroyed over $170,000 worth of equipment in the process, including printers, TVs, and mice, and only stopped destroying them when its disposal budget ran out. But, as the department's own auditor put it, "The destruction of IT components was clearly unnecessary." Indeed, throwing away computer mice seems like a poor approach to ridding an organization of digital threats.

Wonderful.
There was once when I almost did the same thing. Finally found a way to rid of the virus, but in a couple more days, I would have junk everything and started over. I was that frustrated.

Why not just destroy the hard drives, and the digital ROMs &/or flash modules ?....Where else could a virus possibly be lurking ?...I couldn't think of it...

It would make perfect sense to a gov't employee that a mouse would be a virus carrier

I run around to clients all day as QuickBooks advisor. I walked into a nation wide auto part store and they had a kid about ready to reformat. They had a redirect malware, that took about 2 minutes to eliminate. Much of the problem occurs because a lot of network people are still selling XP clients, that haven't been supported in 5 years.

I believe you get what you pay for-- most of the big name go for under $50 bucks a year. I've encountered about every malware out there. If you are working with a bunch of women with internet access on a variety of computers, you'll want to keep a current copy of malwarebyte on a usb flashdrive. You don't know how great a friend you've got, until you've helped a woman hide her indiscretion.

Great!

I used to run a call center. When Microsoft put in the feature where the browser would suggest previous websites that were visited we thought we were going to have to shut the phones off. Hundreds of calls a week from men and women who were going crazy when their browser would suggest going back to the porn site they visited the night before.

We ended up creating a web page on the company website with quick instructions on how to clear the history held by the browser. It brought those calls down from 10-12 minutes to under 3 to give out the web page address.

I cannot fathom throwing away a mouse to fix a virus.

Way back when I first got System Works for $99 less a $20 mail in rebate, it came with a program Ghost 2003 and started imaging my hard drives. Moving on I got other software tools to image hard drives before you pick anything up that is nasty. This is not rocket science, anyone can learn how to. On a norm I never tell anyone my never's but will make the exception and say that I have never had a hard drive go bad on me but have always been able to kick the virus to the curb.
