There is still huge purse money to be had as a runner up. I explained why I feel these super horses are overrated and no I don’t drink. Yesterday’s entries running up against Flightline we’re ridiculous. That’s the best they could come up with? Kudos to the horse who won the second race within a race Country Grammer. That race was more exciting because CG was pressured the whole way and it appeared as though he would be caught but persevered down the stretch. Ran a very game second.

Looks like he might be back at 5. That would be amazing if they do it.

They also have/had very little if any competition to run against. Also let’s take into consideration very small field sizes. Get into trouble or have a bad start with 10-12 entries in a race it changes the complexion rather quickly....not so much in a small 6 horse field where recovery is much easier. I will never be impressed with these small field win super horses. Clearly these horses were born at a good time with no competition to run with.

BTW . Someone mentioned not being able to make any money with Flightline. Well next time use the horse as a free square in the pick 4 and 5. I did and made some better then decent money.
I am an infamous Secretariat skeptic, but it is dead wrong to say he didn't beat good horses. He didn't beat anyone IN THE BELMONT (Sham didn't fire). But, for instance, he beat a bunch of good horses in the Marlboro Cup.

And BTW, Flightline beat good horses yesterday. Several of those horses had wins in big stakes.

That would be fantastic.

With his breeding and on track performance, his stud fee has to be enormous.

3/4 in 109 4/5 going head to head and then Sham starts dropping back, I hardly call that not firing.

He ended up a distant last. Being in a speed duel and then pooping out isn't "firing".

A couple of other things about yesterday:

1. Trevor's call was excellent. It would be very nice if he would hang it up and let this be his valedictory.

2. There were only about 7,000 on track yesterday. Del Mar's tiny main parking lot did not even fill up despite a section of it being cordoned off for limos and ubers. The infield was closed. The clubhouse (where I sat) was 1/3 filled.

California racing is in trouble.

The figures they put out were 12,077. In comparison opening day got 21,750 this year. I wonder if them pushing back the schedule affected attendance as people decided to spend their free time doing something else (like watching football?)
Nevertheless that is lower than some of the bigger race days at Santa Anita like the Santa Anita Derby or Big Cap day.

I have no idea when I stopped going to Delmar regularly, probably mid 90's.
I first went in 1980, I don't ever recall the infield being closed.

As a figure maker myself, I love doing numbers for a big performance like this.
My numbers are a close variation of the Quirin style pace-n-speed method. The par for older male Grade 1 runners is around 112-114.
By my Humble Numbers I gave Flightline a 124.

I would be shocked. For several reasons.
