the African immigrant who saved my life
.
this is a true story which I've never before told to anyone
age 23 I was a wild kid - the opposite of what I am now
I was wandering around DC drunk and stoned (hashish) out of my mind - I had lost my car - I didn't know where it was
I somehow ended up in Rock Creek Park
I saw a cop car pulled off on the side on the grass that had its keys in it
I got into the cop car turned it on and started to drive it away - the driver's side door was still open
an African cab driver - very dark skin - Nigerian - (you got to know this kind of thing living near DC) stopped and told me to get into his cab
he asked me where I lived - I told him - and he drove me home
I didn't have any money to pay him - he didn't care about that
if I had driven away in that cop car the DC cops - known to be especially brutal - would have caught me and beaten the sh** out of me -
and I prolly would have gone to jail for a couple of years and I don't know if I could have recovered from that and had a decent life
I never got to tell the guy how grateful I was for what he did
and I don't know why he cared what happened to me
.
