Isn't it amazing that even back then...55 years ago...there sits Eddie Arcaro talking to a cigarette pimping Mike Wallace, discussing how virtually impossible it is to beat the track takeout (he cites a 16% figure).
I find that totally fascinating given where we are today, 55 years later...

Exactly. That was my same read on this. A nicotine pushing huckster interviewing a glib rider who whitewashed the entire mess that is still with us today. No danger...wow.

Thanks so much for posting this.
Wow, what a tough interview--I thought Eddie handled himself great.
I noticed the 16% takeout comment too.
I really respect Eddie for doing this. He knew going in it was going to be tough.
I also can't help but not say again how stupid the leaders of racing are that
they have never understood that the horseplayer betting is their only
means of existing. Perhaps they should watch this.
Slots are a temporary band-aid that will go away---then what?
Thanks again for posting!!

It's funny (well, not really) how two of the main topics of the interview were how tough the game is to beat with the takeout, and illegal medications in racing.
After 55 years, nothing has really changed one bit...that ought to tell you something right there.

Thanks for posting that. Eddie was awesome! Course I was a small child when I was around him but I remember him being quite a character, lol... In a good way of course. I think it was Eddie, if my memory serves me well.. that introduced me to the Kel-co class calculator. A slide rule CLASS calculator that Eddie was plugging many years ago. Anybody remember that slide rule class calculator. I think I was around 14 at the time, now that's going back some years, lol

I can't thank you enough for that link. Just fantastic. And as I sit here typing, I can't help but notice how refreshingly delicious this Philip Morris manufactured Parliament Light tastes.

Talk about a bygone era...Mike Wallace doing a tough interview while chain smoking...love it!
Makes me want to pull up the ol' Tom Snyder Hitchcock interviews...then again, I don't think he was smoking during that one...

I just love the attitude. "A real man's cigarette, a mild flavor, unfiltered so you truly enjoy the amazing taste of the tobacco."
People today would have declared the "War on Mike Wallace" before the second or third or fourth or fifth or sixth ringing endorsement for the glamorous taste of that fine blend during the interview.

If you can get it - it's not cheap - Arcaro's "I Ride To Win!" is an excellent read.

...Thanks for posting that misscashalot, I really enjoyed it. Mike Wallace was at his usual best asking tough questions. As far as Eddie Arcaro, a great interview, defending his profession and sport, and business.
...If Arcaro had been a little bit bigger, I think he may have made a pretty good actor. Sorta a cross between Bogart and DeNiro. Had a pretty good voice for the cinema too.
...As far as the smoking bit with Wallace, I quit several years ago, but everytime I see someone puffing, especially on T.V. or a movie I get the urge.
...I will be 75 in June, and if I ever go to the Doc, and he tells me I have some incurable disease, and only a few months to go, I`ll jump in my car and get to the closest grocery store as fast as I can, and buy a carton.
... "I LOVE SMOKING"
