If you use HTR and not a database, you are missing a lot.
All those export files chock full of data.....

The last time I used it was when I was doing the studies I described above. At the time, I knew Excel fairly well but had no background in solver/regression analysis. I was able to find help videos on Youtube that got me through it. I still have my old spreadsheets, but it has been so long I'm not the guy to guide you through it now. I'd have to relearn what I did the last time. I will probably revisit it again eventually, but I already have to much on my plate.

I'm not familiar with what you're using for files or a database. If you can post a csv file I might be able to look at it and then post some basic example. I can't post my own stuff because there's too much in it that I'd rather not bring visibility to. There are several ways of using solver and I highly doubt that I use it as elegantly as some do but might be able to get you thinking about various options. I find there's actually a lot data preparation that I need to make before I can even think about using solver on the data. Some of that can be done in excel, some in access. I don't know if you're familiar with the term discretization? Anything like rankings within the race itself or binary characteristics etc etc, there's truly a myriad number of ways to prepare the data that you have. Solver is all about optimization, not really regression, you're optimizing on win rate, or optimize on ROI, whatever your goal is for what you're looking at. The other thing you need is a big sample, split it, solve on the first sample and when it crushes the sample with a +50% ROI you can calm yourself down real quick when it loses more than takeout on the other sample. **Edit I'm not sure what type of file would be acceptable to post out here in the first place so disregard my request to post any type of CSV file if it violates the rules of the board.

per Microsoft.

"Put simply, you can use Solver to determine the maximum or minimum value of one cell by changing other cells."

Have I not been doing that for years??

thank you but what exactly you need....

say i have factor values for fr1 fr2 fr3 and finish position for 1000 horses

is that enough?

Damn. You are more arrogant and egocentric than a former president you hate so much. I'll write this again, slowly so you can understand: Your research is u-s-e-l-e-s-s. You haven't solved anything in 20 years. That might be a world handicapping record!

Not trying to be negative, but are you sure Solver is what you want to invest your time in? It doesn't seem like an appropriate analysis tool for handicapping.

I guess I could try to do something with that. Just for an example.

That is what I'm trying to find out Brian....

Maybe it doesn't work but I need to be sure and put it behind me ...

I have to check but in that book Precision by Wong mentions Solver

Joe are you planning to provide a file for me to work with as an example?

I would say something like this would be sufficient just for kicks:
date, track, racenum, horse, then whatever ratings you have that represent your paceline for each horse for showing the F1,F2,F3, FinishPosition,Odds to $1

A decent number of races 200, 500? Doesn't matter much it's just an example.

I could probably throw something together with that data this weekend. No real plans except to take my son to do some driving, he finally got his permit.
