feels a lot like another baffert horse a few years ago named Bodemeister, and even that horse felt more tractable than this one.

I wouldnt be betting my money given his style and propensity to lug out in the lane.

Gotta respect the winner the way the Derby has played out in recent years. Early speed horses have crossed the wire first every year since Orb. Big figures probably makes some SA Derby contenders defect. The horse closed at 2-1 in future pool and I don’t ever recall that low of odds in second to last pool. Even American Pharoah and Justify got you 5/2 in May.

Yep, on the nose.

I really dislike LIG lugging out in the stretch two times in a row.
Usually it means the horse has leg issues.
I don't buy Mike Smith saying the horse is bothered by the infield screen.......I can't think of any other horses that have run at the current Santa Anita meet who have been affected by the giant screen.......so it's only this horse ?
Come on now.

It's a significant concern.

Forget the trainer speak.

He's the Derby favorite at this point, but he'll have to remain sound.

I'm not a fan of that either.

It guess it depends whether you think he's a little green or a little off somewhere. I'm not sharp enough to be able to tell from watching the race.

I'm going to assume he's green unless he starts missing works or doesn't look good in them. They are at the stage where they are trying to get this horse to relax and rate all by himself in workouts. Running straight is the next lesson.

It could mean something though. Princess Noor was doing some odd things in her workouts before she bore out in a race and came back hurt. Magnum Moon was never the same after his Arkansas Derby win where he bore out badly.

Either way, that was a huge race. He annihilated the highest quality prep field so far and ran faster than PAR to every call. I'm not sure what else he could have done other than run straight and turn water into wine.
