Headphone or headset?

I have a new computer. Windows 8.1 I think. Anyway whenever I plug in my headphones I get a screen that asks Headphone, Audio Out, or Headset. Obviously Audio Out is not the answer. But what's the difference between Headphone and Headset? No matter which I pick it seems to work.

Headsets have a microphone for speaking, headphones do not.

Headset is mono.
