Yeah I got lucky. You're seeing the last 2 of an 8 wager day--every one before that last one lost.

Parx Pick 4
I watched your winning last week and gave Parx a go myself today.... you mentioned you sometimes use a mix of the ability and power horizontal choices in the exotics program. I did just that for the late pick 4 and giddy up. $40.50 bet to get back $286.60

...............
I put this great pic that I found here of racing back in the day because it's the most popular thread and I didn't want to start a new thread
I hope that doesn't ruffle anybody's feathers

Nice call on the #8, however, particularly excellent call on the #1 and having the awareness to play it. Stylish Ninetynine had superb late numbers and was showing good improvement of late. I will be darned if he wasn't right there clearly for 2nd at the end. Excellent call!!

Good morning, and thank you for the kind words, gentlemen
Smoke...you are welcome to post anything you like here
Notice in that pic how nicely people dressed in those days? No backward baseball caps and sweat pants to be found.
Also...where are the women? I don't see a single lady at the windows.

I know a lot of you probably remember when you bet at one window and had to cash your ticket at a different window. They had you standing in line twice.

the worst thing I remember from back in the day was this
there were a lot more coupled entries back then.............like 1a and 1b
so I would bet on the 1 because the 1a was tough
but then I missed the announcement that the 1a was scratched
but the 1 was still up on the toteboard because the 1b was running
the toteboard didn't say 1a or 1b it just said......................................1
and the 1b sucked
and of course ran last back 18 lengths
oh, man - I was like..................can this day possibly get any worse...............................

The "$2 across the board" bet was pretty popular in those days...I can remember they even had a separate window, or two, for that bet.
Was looking at the pick-4 results and pays from last night at MNR. The numbers didn't seem "correct" until you analyze each winner, and sequence.
Pick-4 payoffs @ Mnr last night:
Early P-4
1ST - #3 PURDY BIRDIE $9.20
2ND - #7 DERBY CHAMPAGNE $9.60
3RD - #3 SURF and TURF $5.20
4TH - #6 THIRSTY AGAIN $8.20
Pick 4 (3-7-3-6) (4 Correct) Paid: $1,204.00 Pick 4 Pool $64,616.00
---------or 50 cent ticket paid $301.00
Late P-4
5TH - #3 MAGIC TRAIN $3.00
6TH - #4 CHARLIE'S BELLE $4.00
7TH - #8 ONEPRETTYTHING $13.60
8TH - #2 SHAKLESON $3.80
Pick 4 (1/3/4/7-4-8-2/9) (4 Correct) Paid: $222.40 Pick 4 Pool $46,608.00---------- or 50cent ticket paid $55.60
The early p-4 had no longshots win, nor any big prices to ensure a nice payoff. But...it only had one favorite win (yes SURF AND TURF was a lukewarm favorite)
The late p-4 had a $13 winner...but the other 3 races were won by obvious solid favorites.
This explains why the eminently hittable (even though I missed it) early p-4 paid SIX TIMES what the late paid.

PARX the greatest racetrack in the world!
It's the greatest while you're winning, anyway. Pretty much BLOWS like any other track when losing.
EXOTIC BETS! gave it's dedicated users another pick-4 score. I actually, briefly considered eliminating AUSSIE MIST in the last race, before deciding on WILD CARAMELO in the race before.

At SA and DM you would bet at the windows that were facing the track and you would have to go to the other side in the back to cash your tickets. They had sell windows and cash windows.

one nice thing from back in the day
at Laurel they had a tiny enclosed stand right next to the paddock manned by a mutuel teller
so, you could go to the paddock to look at the horses and bet right there
never saw that anywhere else - of course, I haven't been to all that many tracks
I've read accounts of punters who said they could toss a fave if he didn't look good in the paddock or bet on a shot if he looked very good
I never got to that level - and that's something you don't hear much about now
