trainer (and jockey) beyers.....

idk? maybe timeform or thorograph already have something like this? and i'm sure hsr and hth do. but with pace, speed, and class figures already in track programs and Tomlinson numbers in drf, is it finally time for some more advanced trainer and jockey ratings to appear in mainstream pps?

not a perfect solution, but here's what I propose:

median earnings per start translated into a beyer style number that comes from a chart derived from setting median trainer eps's against median beyers for older male horses at different tracks.

for example say we assume 29th ranked bob oliva at pen and 29th ranked gary Sciacca at bel are about median trainers at these tracks. bob's eps of 1477 would get the median pen beyer for older males and gary's eps of 4582 would get Belmont's.

here would be some (very) rough example numbers:

chad brown 100
Jamie ness 85
tim kreiser 84
gary Sciacca 82
bob oliva 70

again, not a perfect system but the start of something better than simple win percentages.

thanks tom. I would LOVE to see cj post some beyer style estimates on the trainers I listed!!

another possible short cut I just did with the eps numbers was to assign bob o the 70 and build the chart the old fashioned way by jumping 2.8 beyer points for every 25% increase in eps. this method yielded approximately the following numbers, which weren't too far off from my original estimates:

brown 103
ness 85
kreiser 85
Sciacca 84
oliva 70

maybe this chart is too tight?

would love to hear more about different ratings players here have translated into numbers resembling the speed figures they use!!

They have two free sample races every day - check on out.
They rate the trainer in different categories - really good stuff.
