They get paid by increased viewership.

MGM becomes the first to launch mobile by the end of this week.
Wondering what the heck is up with William Hill... they were first out of the box at Monmouth but there has been precious little word as to why they have not gone live with their mobile app.

Understand that's one way they get paid. They want more. Is there some reason why they couldn't pursue more? The leagues control the content which would seem to put them in a strong negotiating position absent some legal or regulatory constraint. Not advocating their position just wondering if anyone knows what constraints exist that would limit the leagues from exploiting this negotiating position.

Exactly, if it wasn't for gambling late season games between teams out of the play-off race would get little viewer ship and the value of selling time slots for commercials would be pennies on the dollar. I wonder how much fantasy sports has increased viewer ship of late season meaningless games?

According to the article upthecreek linked, the deal is worth $25 million. I presume MGM paid the NBA for the rights. If that is the case, the NBA is also getting paid for the licensing/IP. A relatively paltry amount for the NBA I guess, but they got paid nonetheless.

The NBA wants access to population-level data about bettors. They don't necessarily need personal information; they want to know which teams generate the most interest and other related info at the population level. That's the thing they want most I think.
The world is now about getting access to data and profiting from it.

Question for exchange players. Anyone think with the ability to now bet sports in Jersey tracks previously not on the exchange will now allow their races to be on it in order to compete for our gambling dollar? Probably a pipe dream that I know the answer to just frustrating that after 2 1/2 years NYRA and Keeneland are still not on it in Jersey but are in England.
Follow up question, but has anyone used the Draftkings online platform yet? If so, any pros and cons? Thanks guys.

DraftKings mobile platform is fairly well designed and offers betting on a million things. You can bet in play on pretty much everything, and you can cash out your wager at any time for a prescribed price.
Unlike FanDuel, you can bet baseball 5 inning and three inning lines, and alternate run lines up the wazzoo.
Unfortunately, the vig is excessive for money lines.
And they want you to lay 12-10 for football, which is downright criminal.
I imagine the vig will go down when they get some company on the mobile betting front. Can't imagine what is holding up William Hill....
PS
It can be a pain to use in areas with poor cell service. I live in NY and drive 15 minutes to cross the border, any bad reception can make entering wagers a hassle. It continues to check your location throughout, so you get knocked off the system again and again.
Still, better than driving to the Meds.
