So how many previously high temperatures were "obliterated" over the weekend?" I actually saw it written that a heat wave was "obliterating" previous high temperatures. I doubt the "obliterating" heat wave broke any records, if it did it probably "obliterated" a previous high by 1/2 degree.

Phoenix on Tuesday broke its record for consecutive days of highs of at least 110F (43.3C), in a record-breaking summer of heat affecting millions in the US and around the world.

The US city, which is the fifth biggest in the country with a population of about 1.6 million, often ranks as the hottest or one of the hottest, and had a previous record of 18 consecutive days of 110F or higher in 1974.

Phoenix, where the hot months now stretch from April to September, equalled that record on Monday and went past it on Tuesday to create a new record of 19 days of 110F or higher heat, according to readings taken from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport, the National Weather Service said.

Man, too, may be somewhat responsible for the cooling trend. The University of Wisconsin's Reid A. Bryson and other climatologists suggest that dust and other particles released into the atmosphere as a result of farming and fuel burning may be blocking more and more sunlight from reaching and heating the surface of the earth.

The World Meteorological Organization says the heatwave in the northern hemisphere is set to intensify. An estimated 61,000 people may have died in heatwaves last year in Europe alone.

The EU’s emergency response coordination centre issued red alerts for high temperatures for most of Italy, north-eastern Spain, Croatia, Serbia, southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.

If the sea level actually rises maybe it will wipe out all the liberals that keep buying beach front property in the Hamptons and Martha's Vineyard. So there is a glass half full way of looking at it.
