We're talking about a President, here. The point being, just simply respect for the office that was created by the founding fathers of this country, and to properly teach our children by good example...not much of which are they getting today, for sure!

How is it disrespectful of the office to avoid putting yourself in the position of shaking hands with some one? How does respect for the office require that I initiate an action to shake a president's hand?
You don't shake hands with an office, you shake hands with a person. It is a free country, and I still have the ability to decide who I respect enough as a person to want to shake hands with.
If a president walked up to me and stuck his hand out, I would shake it out of common courtesy. I would do the same thing with anyone in a polite social environment. If the option to originate the action is mine, my standards are a lot higher than that.

In your original comment you said that you wouldn't initiate shaking the hand of any of the recent presidents. That's quite a broad statement. I find it difficult to understand that you could find no redeeming qualities in any of them for any of them to be worthy of your hand shake. That is extreme, in my opinion.
The 'office' is symbolic of all of those recent presidents who have occupied it. Initiating a hand shake could surely be symbolic of respecting that office, even if not the men occupying it, and would likely be thought of as a commendable gesture for those who know you, as well. But of course, you do have the right to decide to do whatever you'd like.
Just my point of view.

That is your opinion. And your problem with my position is that it does not conform to your opinion or your standards.
Your opinion defines your standards for respect and honor, but it doesn't meet mine. Under my standards, a person earns respect by virtue of his character and actions, not by virtue of the position he holds.

Exactly!
And if this "position" is an ELECTED position, then the person who holds it is just a "public servant"...regardless of his assigned "title". And he should be VIEWED as a "public servant".

This one is getting backlash from some high up Republicans in Washington. And Deputy Press Secy. Sarah Huckabee Sanders looked foolish trying to defend Trump to the media.
Every time Trump does something like this, it takes time and effort away from getting his job done.
