Bolt D'Oro gets 114 in Met- whatever happened to giving 3 year olds a re weight break
I remember back in the day when even good 3 year olds would get 110 or so in this race and would receive 15 or 16 pounds from the favorites.
Not any more. Bolt D'Oro- who is no Holy Bull, Gulch, or Arts and Letters- gets 114, just 8 less than the topweight and 3 or 4 less than most of the older horses in the field.

OK, but they could still topweight at 126 or higher and get the spread that way.

Even giving him the 8 pounds (and only to Biscuits) does anyone think he can win? That is, is he truly anywhere near a 4-1 (20%) shot? I don't think so. Is that why Ruis is trying this, though?

I think Ruis is crazy. He should be 15 to 1 against this field and receiving this little weight.
I like Bolt, but he has never looked at horses comparable to the New York handicap division, unless you count Justify, and Bolt never got close to Justify.

He actually DID get pretty close to Justify, who is only going for a Triple Crown tomorrow. Justify had everything his own way in that race, drifted out a bit entering the stretch and forced Bolt to duck toward the inside. It was an impressive race. He threw in the towel in the Derby at 10 furlongs and a sea of slop. Easily excusable.
The Chad Brown horse who won the Alysheba isn't in the Met; Army Mule isn't in the Met. There's nobody in this race that should intimidate Bolt. Mind Your Biscuits is a nice horse, but probably better suited to 7f. Bee Jersey? We'll see. It's one thing to win a field at Lone Star and another to win the Met Mile.

If he had a different trainer I would be more favorable to his chances....
I dont think this is the greatest Met Mile field.

My thoughts exactly, along with the less than ideal post position.

Gee, I gotta be old. They have not made real weights in Handicaps for years now. Like this is something new? He's an interesting entry but I agree with LemonSoup ……..4-1 or less? Tough to like that.

Today's horses and trainers are not to be mistaken for the real race horses of the 60s-70s-80s.
Surprised more don't wear diapers instead of saddles.

Tom,
Don't you think it "Depends" on the person?

Bolt d'Oro would get 11 pounds in a weight for age race but only gets eight for a handicap? The "highweight" is 122? Just scratch the handicap part of the Met Mile and be done with it already.

IMO, Bolt is a legit contender here, would also not hesitate to play Ransom The Moon here, also. If they let the 10 out on his own, both are in trouble. But the 10 is going to have to deal with the horse directly to his inside first. If that does not happen, then the 10 could be all alone up front.
